Let the business owners decide for themselves, and let the public vote with their dollars. I'm an ex-smoker, and if I don't want to be around smoke somewhere I don't go. I don't whine to the government to make others change to suit me. I'm happy I don't understand the mindset of those that do. We've got more than enough of that already.

Why does it hack me off? Because it doesn't stop there. There have already been attempts to pass laws to make it illegal to smoke in your own car or in your own home (thankfully beaten back).

Let people decide such issues for themselves.

Why?

Because at this point in human history, cigarette smoke has been deemed a carcinogen that causes cancer. Smoking and smoking-related illnesses costs governments worldwide countless billions of dollars.

What makes a bar or a restaurant exempt from smoking laws? As I've asked in the other thread, why wasn't there outrage when smoking in grocery stores and shopping malls was banned? Smoking at gas stations while filling your car with gas? Why is this outrage directed towards bars and restaurants?

Why can't some people in Missouri understand the ramifications of public smoking?

Alcohol kills as well, and it's legal to consume. As is tobacco. Do you want the Government to nanny you and protect you from everything that's bad for you?

There was, but the folks whining to the government instead of letting folks decide for themselves sadly carried the day.

Because of the potential for a large explosion and fire? Please tell me you're not so much of a dipsh*t you can't see the difference between lighting up after dinner and drinks, and flicking your Bic at a gas pump.

Because it doesn't stop there, just like it didn't stop with malls, stores, etc. See my previous comment regarding the dipsh*ts who tried to ban smoking in your own home or vehicle. IMO, it won't stop with tobacco either. Too many whiners in this country who can't be bothered to take responsibility for their own decisions.

IMO, the vast majority of smokers and non smokers do. As I've said, I quit years ago.

Why can't folks in California understand the ramifications of letting people and businesses decide such a matter for themselves? Why can't they understand the ramifications of letting the market decide? Oh, right...that's a very foreign concept in California.

Here it is in a nutshell: If there are people opposed, they won't go a bar/restaurant that allows smoking. If they aren't, they will. If the bar is suffering because it does or doesn't allow smoking, it will adapt or go under. Simple. Too simple for some, apparently.

Hell, at one time you could smoke at your desk at work depending on your employer. If folks didn't like it...they didn't work there! What a shocking concept!

I did a gig out at Phillip Morris corporate several years back. That place was f**king disgusting. Not surprisingly they were having server problems due to the buildup of s**t inside all of their servers. Their admin was a smoker and would do so in the server room.

First off, if you drink alcohol, it doesn't affect me UNLESS under the influence, you hit me, cause an auto accident, etc. The act of drinking alcohol in NO WAY affects MY health.

Comprende?

No shit, Sherlock.

People could smoke at the gas pump for more than 50 years before that law went into effect. Why did it go into effect? Oh yeah, to save lives.

Of course, you obviously can't tell the difference between smoking at a gas station and smoking in a bar or restaurant because the effect may not be as immediate, but the end result could very well be the same.

So you're of the opinion that governments WORLDWIDE and state across the country are full of dipsh*ts because smoking has been banned in public places?

Wow, thanks for the insight, Mr. Science!

Bullshit. Bull. fucking. Shit.

I LOVE how ALL these smokers on Chiefsplanet are just SO polite and don't smoke in the presence of non-smokers while they're at restaurants.

BS

I've been to KC twice in the past few months and going to restaurants and bars is nearly unbearable. I was recently at the Fox & Hounds on Metcalfe where some asswipe was smoking (and very heavily, I might add) in the NON-SMOKING SECTION. One of the people we were with was pregnant. Real nice, this smoker. Anyway, we tell the waitress and guess what? WE are moved to the SMOKING section. Whoo-Pee!

About ten minutes later, this disgusting human waste moves to table next to us and begins smoking and blowing it our direction! Yeah! So cool!

This kind of behavior is not legal in many other states and countries across the globe, but I guess it's OKAY for certain Midwesterners.

And people here WONDER why laws need to be enacted?

JFC

Yeah, because that should be one of the choices we have to make when choosing an employer. It's annoying enugh when people sit in my cube after coming in from a smoke break.

What a moron. Smoking in the server room? Might as well do metal work and smithing in there.

So if 18% of the population had rancid gas and insisted on farting your direction while you tried to eat you wouldn't try and get something done about that?

Dude. The entire building was smoking. At the time they had just been forced to stop the program where they gave a free carton of cigs a week to any employee.

It will pass. Democracy triumphs over individual rights once again. The business owner is the only one who should have a right to decide this.
