Mark Mangino will not return as Kansas football coach, a source close to the situation told Joe Schad of ESPN Thursday night.
The team is scheduled to be told at a meeting Thursday evening.
Athletic director Lew Perkins launched an investigation into Mangino's treatment of players three weeks ago. The Jayhawks won the first five games of the season before going on a seven-game losing streak. Mangino was 50-48 in eight years -- two wins shy of the school record for a coach.
After going 12-1 in 2007 and winning the Orange Bowl, Mangino was given a raise and a contract extension through 2012.

I have an 8th grade kid who's dream is to play for football at KU....and, I swear, though I'm a grad I've done nothing to foster that dream. Guess he likes me, and wants to follow in dad's footsteps up Mt. Oread. I'm proud. It's by no means a shoo-in, but for him it's more than a pipe-dream--although a partial scholarship to someplace like NWMS or Emporia State is much more "likely."

If in 4 years, he works hard enough, has the talent, avoids major injuries, and gets enough of the breaks---that he signs to play at KU....at this point, I'd prefer it be for someone other than Mangino. He loves the game, he loves the competition, and he has a chance to earn his way through college doing something he loves. I'd hate for it to be for someone who lacks the self-control and self-discipline to get himself together--despite the fact that I think he's a capable and accomplished coach.

The bottom-line is, for the sake of the program and for Mangino's own health and sanity, he needs to take a year or two off...to see if he can get his shit together. If he does, some school will get a good coach in a year or two...but his time at KU has passed.

I was just pointing out a possible reason they didn't fire him outright was because they had appreciated what the guy had done for the program.
Yeah, the settlement was almost certainly about a clean break. If they just fired him for cause his course of action would almost certainly to be to fight it which will take forever to finally get resolved. Plenty of chance for it to draw lots of negative attention to the team and/or him over the course. Just easier for everyone to see if they can find a number that works for both sides and looks like they did.

Bingo, and quite frankly this was the proper way for it to end. A clean break. It's just a shame though things had to get as bad as they got even. That being said I wish Coach Mangino well, but time for someone new. Time to search the coaching carousel. I wonder who it will be?

Mangino I think deserves at least that for resurrecting KU's football program from the dead.

okay guys here's what I heard....

Mangino has been being pushed by Perkins for the last 2 years to do more national interviews, glad hand with alumni and basically do more to grow the program but Mangino only wanted to coach football. He felt all that "other" stuff took away from the point, winning football. Perkins point was that Kansas football needed to grow to be a BCS contender every year. Media and money was an important part to making that happen.

Disclaimer.....This came from a budddy's realitive who works in Perkins office. So take it for what its worth, grain of salt etc.

I believe Lew Perkins originally hired him at UCONN and he's supposed to be a potentially hot commodity right now.

-Kevin Sumlin - Houston Head Coach

-Brent Venables - OU Associate Head Coach/ Def. Coordinator/ LBers Coach

Harbaugh wouldn't be a bad choice either assuming he would agree to leave Stanford, which I don't really see him doing.
Houston coach Kevin Sumlin would actually be a great hire for you guys. Could be catching lightening in a bottle with him - he's young, but he has the pedigree and early success you look for.

I'm fully aware that once all this shit came out, he had to go, but ultimately what potential coaching candidates will see is that Mangino was fired because he poked Arist Wright in the chest and yelled at him. Why in the name of **** would ANY coach come here? That was my point.

After the media ball got rolling, he had to go, but KU should have never let it get rolling. Perkins should have taken Mangino in his office, forced him to quit, leak some shit to the media from an "unnamed source" that he may have potentially had a health problem, and it's problem solved.

I'm betting Kevin Sumlin

He has excellent ties to Texas recruiting, has an great mind for Offense, he's relatively young, energetic, and someone the ku fan base can rally around and relate to.

IMO, that would be an excellent hire, and a logical move for both Sumlin and ku. I don't see Harbaugh as a very good option. Larry Fedora would be a good candidate as well, but I think you drain more mileage off the Sumlin hire. jmho.

I think Sumlin is the guy. His squad at Houston puts up huge numbers. The only problem is that his defense gives up a lot too. Double edged sword.

I also know a few NFL assistants who would jump all over this job...

Philip Montgomery should at least get an interview with KU. He's worked with Art Briles for years. Sure Baylor didn't have a winning season, but look at what Briles' staff did in Houston, in such a short time frame. Houston got impatient, like KU, for a win-shorted season.

Good luck, Jabba, wherever you land. But don't land hard.
