Why do you go to a bar/pub/club for the first time?
Ok about to run a "focus group" with some bar owner friends and I want to see if what they THINK brings people into their bars is really the reason....

Would really appreciate you guys telling me what FIRST brings you into a "new" bar and once we have enough ideas I will start a poll...

I know a few obvious ones... know someone who works there. Went to see a band you like. Went to meet friends who already hang there. What else do we have?

(Once we have this sorted out, we'll do another poll on why you come back to particular bars after that first visit)

I'll be honest. When I went to Dallas last week...

I used reviews and Google Maps extensively. I found several restaurants and bars to go to. Also used it for attractions.

Yelp.com was something I used, along with its app. The Where app... Trip Advisor...

Mostly, local search reviews. Then when I was done, I left a review, as well.

In fact, Business is changing with mobile, local and social consumer reviews. you better be on top of your buzz or your business will fail.

Yelp, a user-generated business review website based in San Francisco, has been the topic of many a news story recently related to negative business review postings. And the occasional lawsuit that follows. But things definitely got much worse for the becoming-infamous startup due to a long, long article in the East Bay Express today. The article’s title? Yelp and the Business of Extortion 2.0. Ouch.

Numerous business owners who have profiles on Yelp have accused the company of using shady business practices in order to make money. Frequent sales calls from the company offering to remove negative reviews for $299 a month are apparently a big revenue driver. Some business owners have stated that negative reviews mysteriously move to the top of their profiles before the business calls, or negative reviews appear if the offer is denied. Many think these negative reviews are written by Yelp employees in order to generate sales leads.

In fact, most of the business owners who came forward with allegations wouldn’t even give their real names fearing retaliation from the company. Obviously a website with 16 million unique visitors monthly has quite the power over mom-and-pop shops. Hence the Mafia comparison in the title of this article.

I’ll let you read the six page article yourself for all the details, but the theme of the article doesn’t differ from page one on. Many a business owner feels Yelp is crooked. Yelp’s response? Denial, denial, denial. If this kind of publicity keeps up for the company, expect a business with great potential to bite the dust.

I definitely agree regarding Yelp and the direction things are moving... I keep stressing to the guys I know who own bars/restaurants... if they don't stay on top of Yelp... they will suffer in the long run.

If you read Gladwell's Tipping Point, it really helps to explain why social media works. People that use social media are often mavens and connectors. The majority of the population don't use it, but the people who do use it may play an important role in the success and failure of certain trends and businesses.

I've seen local restaurants and bars catapulted to success or failure completely based on the buzz from twitter and the people who use it.

Nicely put. If you look at what google is doing with Place Pages, the opinions of said mavens are becoming more and more accesible to anyone who uses google and not just the facebook/twitter/yelp crowd.

it seems most any place I go to anymore a draw of beer is $5.

is that normal?

you gotta look for the dive bars. the palce closest to me is barely noticable, and looks like shit, but always has well drinks and draws for $2.

my GF always uses google to look at reviews...for anything. she won't go anywhere or buy anything that has a bad review on-line.

I don't pay much attention to that stuff. First of all, there's no way to tell who submitted that info, and what agenda they might have. Secondly, we survived just fine before having access to internet reviews.
