"Is Having Alex Smith the Worst Purgatory in Football?"--Dan LeBatard

He mentioned it a few times on his radio show today. The quotes in reference is from the top of the second hour. in full:

"What is the worst purgatory in football? Is it Alex Smith, where you're going to be OK, and hugely boring, and never win anything, or is it the whole Philip Rivers situation of always being down late and having to go the whole length of the field?"

"It's not Hell; it's Purgatory. You're OK, but you're not good enough and you're not going to be good enough."

"You're not going to do any sort of meaningful winning with Alex Smith as your QB. Nothing."

"It's hard to watch when you watch what they were playing against and he's, 'all I wanna do is not turn the ball over, all I wanna do is it's 3rd and 9 and I'll throw it three yards, or I'll take a sack.'"

"You'll get to the playoffs, and you'll lose."

Did you seriously cite that one game, which was an anomaly when looking at his career, to imply he was 'throwing bombs' under harbaugh? You know, the coach that benched him for a guy now backing up Blaine Gabbert?

GTFO.

Even those of us who lean towards the positive side of things have our limits, and being Chiefs fans... those limits are diminished each year

I have tried and tried to dwell on Smiths good attributes and not his weaknesses, and I fully realize that at least 50% of this is on Reid and his absolute insistence on NOT sticking with something thats working... be it the running game, or downfield passing

But this is year 4 for Smith (his longest run in any scheme), his mastery of the system should be complete

Not only that, but they have continually upgraded the players around him... this is, no question about it, the most talented group of players Smith has ever had at his disposal

Yet here we are, a quarter of the way through the season, and the offense has looked like total ASS a good solid 85% of that time... there is no justification for that, no excuses ring true anymore

Fact is, Smith has a very limited ceiling and we are now beating our heads against it... consistently beating elite teams with him isnt possible, his limitations are too easily exposed against the best

I am ****Officially**** at my Matt Cassel Moment of Truth with him

I think Reid loves him because he just wants to protect the football and play D.

Andy doesn't seem worried about driving the ball 80, or 75 now, yards down field because he expects his D to force a turnover or ST's to set up the O for a 10 play 40 yard FG drive.

Andy is content to get one TD drive a game and 4 FG's out of his offence and then sit back and allow his D to ball hawk into a turnover.

A kc fan used to tell me back in 2013 that the Broncos O scored too fast. Well, the key to winning is out scoring the other team. Pitt did it Sunday night with alacrity. Sure it is nice to control the clock and possess the ball on O and tire out the other team but there is a problem if you do force 6 turnovers like in the Jets game and yet they still have a chance to score late and make it come down to an onside kick.

Fact is that even with the "death by efficient paper cut O" (as a reporter described your O) alex is still not really moving the ball outside of a couple drives a game and there is no quick strike threat even with macklin on the team because alex can't throw a consistent deep ball.

Meanwhile look what Philly is doing with a rookie.

Really clears up where our offensive/play-calling issues lie...

I'm using it as an example of Alex being an extension of his HC.

Kraperdick would have most certainly not regressed as badly under Harbaugh as he did under the guy who replaced Harbaugh. Alex could have possibly won a Super Bowl (or two) in San Fran with Harbaugh and Gore/Crabtree/Davis.

Andy Reid will never win a Super Bowl, no matter who his QB is.

THAT is my point.

Seeing the gifs makes me believe that the offense will be better with a good QB, but even then Andy's playcalling and 2 minute offense is a huge detractor and it will never get better.

We also need a new DC. Sutton is very good against average/bad offense's, but he gets his shit pushed in when it comes to anything more.

This team has so much talent going to waste. My god it's sad.
