I mean people trying to sit here and say that Taylor was as big a problem as Morris last weekend are just nuts. Taylor hasn't been worth his contract but he's been an above average pass protecting RT. He's not been the reason our passing game has fallen on its face. Frankly, Smith really wasn't before he got hurt either.

Our OTs have been solid. Not great, not awful. They've done credible work all year until this last game.

I really can't see a good argument for trying to lump them in with the offenses struggles this season. They've played fine.
BECAUSE!!!

The problem with Taylor's penalties is that they are not just stalling drives or taking points off the board... it's the intangible cost. The team is clearly frustrated as hell. What might just be a five yard penalty becomes a flashpoint for a QB who is already sick and tired of his teammates not stepping up and doing their job.

I can deal with anything from an OT as long as they keep the QB from getting hit, but Taylor isn't even doing that right now.

The good news is that either he massively improves, or they can get out from under it after next year. I think you should expect another tackle on day 1 or 2 of the draft next year.

Very well stated. Taylor has basically been as good as he was last year minus the bullshit penalties. Is he worth 80 million? Hell no, but it's not like he held Veach at gunpoint for that contract. There were plenty of other options and we threw 80 million at him. How were we supposed to know he'd become a target of the league for playing the same way he has his whole career?

Smith was very solid before he was hurt as well. Last week was the first time we missed him, and at this point I think you do put him back in before playoff time if he's healthy. I just can't trust Morris yet, but I'm glad he got the experience. Another offseason playing as the starter from day one and I think he'll be fine for next year.

Like you said, neither of these guys are the problem at all.

I get people saying lets average it out 3 years for $60M but I look at it as his ACTUAL cost per year.

I think for the $5.825M he is costing us this year he is over performing. Next season at $24.725 could still be a good value if he keeps the pass blocking the same but improves on the penalties and run blocking.

The one thing his contract does is handcuff us slightly if a opportunity comes along where a top tackle hits the market like say if 49ers cut/trade Trent Williams because his contract goes up over $30M next season. Having Taylor's contract could make it very hard or impossible to add another tackle at $20M+.

But with Jones probably being off the books next season that gives Veach some wiggle room to either spend at tackle, WR or Dline if something comes up.

He's also been unfairly targeted all season with flags due to Collinsworths fat mouth

I don't think he's been above average at all. Historically maybe, not this year. The penalties ARE a liability and are absolutely worth lumping in with the offensive problems given how many drives they've stalled drives. He cannot and has never been able to run block, a bigger
problem than some seem to want to admit. There's been plenty of games he's mediocre in pass-pro, sure, but not good. It's great he's not getting Mahomes killed but damn he has been unhelpful and until he can learn not to hold or false start for an astronomical salary he's going to be a problem. The Frank Clark of the defense if you will...

The penalties have been surprising but why do people think he was a bad signing? He's overpaid a bit but nothing crazy.

The idea that Veach thinks that - for the same level of play - Taylor is a bargain this year but will be too expensive next year is comical.

If the Chiefs could get out of the contract after 1 year with only a 5.8mm hit, yes, you're right. But they can't.

This is similar to the way they structured the Sammy Watkins contract and is just the way they like to move money around for larger multi-year deals.

Damn, its a pretty bad contract for us if he doesn't improve his play.

Looks like he's with us until 2026:
https://www.spotrac.com/nfl/kansas-c...-taylor-29070/

If you cut him, you pay him $34m next year. If you want to restructure him next year to make room for others you can pay him up to $14m in bonus and down to $11m in salary.https://www.spotrac.com/nfl/tools/ro...y-chiefs/2024/

Its almost as if, and bear with me here, you shouldn't sign right tackles who aren't very good to 20M a year.

I was pretty happy when I heard we signed Taylor but I expected his price tag was only a little higher than Wylies. Figured it was around 10M when I heard the news then confusion set in when I found out it was 20M per.
