And on a day where the squad goes 3/14 w/ RISP and twice fails to get a run in despite having a bases loaded, 1 out situation, you have to expect some angst.

I was looking at the Jays and their recent run and messing around with run differentials. There are 6 teams in all of MLB that have given up fewer than 422 runs....the Cardinals have given up 322.

They're about .7 RPG better than 2nd place; a full 75 runs ahead.

It's not just that the pitching has been this good, it's that it's been damn near 20% better than the 2nd best team in baseball.

"HOW DO THE CARDINALS DO IT?!?!?" It's not rocket science - the SPs this year have been historically great.

Right now all 5 guys are deserving of a rotation spot. However, there is a lot of season left so a lot of things could happen. Jaime's shoulder could blow up again. The Cards have to manage Wacha and Martinez's innings so their arms don't fall off.

One nice thing about the tough decision about who to put in the pen is that the odd man out becomes a great emergency long guy so if any of the other 4 struggle even a little bit, you can have a quick hook knowing that you have a top line starter to put in the game.

That's a nice problem with to have.

2 weeks ago you could kill him with soft stuff away from lefties. That pitch he hit off Locke into RC for the lead was the exact same pitch that David Holmberg shredded him with just a week or so ago. He's just a sound hitter. If you throw him crap, he won't swing at it. If you throw him strikes, he'll battle you. There's nothing particularly terrifying about him as a hitter, but I really wouldn't want to face him with runners on in a key spot either.

He and Grichuk are just polar opposites as hitters. An alternative way of looking at it is that they're very good complementary players; put those two guys in the same lineup and they can do a lot to cover for each other's respective weaknesses.

I'd still really like to see the kid hitting 2 for a bit. This isn't your 'standard' rookie - he came from a baseball factory at Stanford and has been known as a poised, polished hitter his whole career. Even in 2014 when his power vanished, nobody thought his approach had faltered. I think he has the wherewithal to do well up there.

His ability to cover all the plate and lay off the pitchers pitch reminds me of Carpenters AB's. This guy rarely looks overmatched. Grichuk is the opposite. He looks overmatched way too much. But, he makes up for it with the power.

I'm watching on FSMW so I have no idea what Sutcliffe said, but no, he will not pitch in the postseason.
