Mark Mangino will not return as Kansas football coach, a source close to the situation told Joe Schad of ESPN Thursday night.
The team is scheduled to be told at a meeting Thursday evening.
Athletic director Lew Perkins launched an investigation into Mangino's treatment of players three weeks ago. The Jayhawks won the first five games of the season before going on a seven-game losing streak. Mangino was 50-48 in eight years -- two wins shy of the school record for a coach.
After going 12-1 in 2007 and winning the Orange Bowl, Mangino was given a raise and a contract extension through 2012.

No mention of Charlie Strong? He's rumored to be Louisville's #1 target. Or is KU football not as big as Louisville?

No probation that I recall, unless it was something really, really minor in scope and penalty that escapes my aging mind.

Powers won early with Al Onofrio's talent. He couldn't recruit, and worst of all he totally alienated St. Louis and that talent pool completely dried up.* Really, MU wasn't able to make inroads in St. Louis again until Pinkel arrived (Cornell Ford can't coach DBs, but he's been instrumental in rebuilding bridges to St. Louis).

* Except for ... TONY VAN ZANT!

Well, I am getting old (from wiki):

On October 24, 1979, the NCAA's Committee on Infractions publicly reprimanded MU for a violation of NCAA Constitution 3-2 related to a failure to exercise institutional control. The violation was in regard to the use of a fund established outside the university for the purpose of paying Powers for debt he assumed while negotiating to become MU's head coach. NCAA regulations require the university's involvement when its coach receives a cash supplement related to duties he is performing on the institution's behalf, and the NCAA found that MU had failed to do so in this case.

Kansas: One of our sources tells us that a Kansas rep talked with Herm Edwards over a week ago. The other name we hear Kansas would like to talk with is Texas wide receivers coach Bobby Kennedy.

This is who I want... he is only making 700k a year... AND... if you are going to be successful in the big 12... you need to mine Texas for talent. Having been in Houston and the recruits being aware of the success he had there... makes this a no-brainer to me.

Not only that, but he's just a good dude.

I met him at the Alamo Bowl in 98 while he was an assistant at Purdue - I think he was coaching receivers at the time. You won't find a more humble and hard working guy. I really hope you don't get him
