[Easy 6]

Seems you cant look at Yahoo these days without seeing atleast one story about KISS... stuff about the Rock HOF, links to a huge Rolling Stone article etc.

It got my juices flowing for all things KISS, spent a good bit of last night watching concerts and clips, it all reminded just how freakin cool these guys were... they are directly responsible for my love of rock n roll and I'm far from alone, everyone from Garth Brooks to Pearl Jam (Mike McCreadys solo on Alive is aped from Ace Frehleys solo on She) consider them huge influences.

Its a disgrace that it took them this long to get into the Hall... they've sold more albums than The Who, Van Halen and The Doors, among many others.

I can see that. I was kind of similar. My dad was not a hippie, but I used to drive him crazy at an early age asking questions about music. He always tells a story about me at maybe 5-6 years old bugging him to try to understand the difference between bass, rhythm, & lead guitars. He told me to just listen to the song and be quiet. That was never going to work with me.

My Dad used to tell me things like "I saw Hendrix in Davenport" and "I remember when I snuck your uncle into a Steppenwolf concert", as if to infer that nothing I ever did would be as cool as him.

To his credit, those things WERE pretty ****ing cool.

So, the thing I've always wondered is how you metal/classic rock guys stay into that music for so long. I was really into classic stuff like you in HS (Zep, Alice Cooper, Deep Purple, etc. I was like a sponge) but, because I can't do anything without having music playing, I have fallen in love with and subsequently gotten completely sick of nearly every classic rock band that ever existed. I still appreciate a lot of those old bands for what they were, but I can't listen to them much anymore. How are you still able to listen to them after so many years? I'm constantly looking for something fresh.

I'm the same way. Although in a lot of cases, the "new" music I listen to is really music that's been out a while that I never really listened to at the time. Right now, for example, I'm listening to a 2003 Dropkick Murphys CD (Blackout). Aside from a song here or there, I'd rarely listened to DKM before last year, but when I started getting into them then, I found that I liked a lot of their stuff.

I get bored pretty quickly too and switch around a lot. It doesn't mean that I dislike the old songs; I just want to listen to something new (to me) too. Large capacity iPods were a godsend. I have about 11,000 songs on mine and only listen on random. I never listen to albums anymore.

I thought I had died and gone to heaven when I got my first 5 disc CD changer.

First of all, every band eventually mentions another band. Whether they're citing them as influences or mentioning them as their favorite "new" band, your favorite bands will eventually give you clues as to who you should listen to next. I got into Motorhead and Diamond Head, for example, because I heard Lars Ulrich say good things about them back in the late 80's. Ultimately, I ended up liking those bands more than I like Metallica.

Secondly, some of my favorite bands have simply MASSIVE disographies. Recompiling my David Bowie, Iron Maiden, or Scorpions collections in digital format is something that takes years (and is still ongoing). With every purchase, I'm rediscovering music that I might not have heard for 5, 10, or even 20 years.

Lastly, there's still music being made in the genres I like. Stoner metal or doom metal is still being made. Bands like Mastodon, Queens of the Stone Age, Red Fang...shit, we've got a whole thread dedicated to it:

And of course, the new stoner bands mention their influences, which exposed me to bands I'd only been loosely acquainted with before - bands like Sir Lord Baltimore, Pentagram, and Budgie.

Finally, I've always tried to step a bit outside and look at things that aren't quite in the vein I'm used to. I love The Darkness, Radiohead, Muse, and My Chemical Romance. Bands like that give me a greater appreciation for older music like Queen and Pink Floyd, which I love as well.

In other words, my musical world is a big circle that continuously feeds itself.

And I'm listening to "Odyssey" right now. Thanks for sticking that ****ing song in my head.

I do that a lot too. There's a lot of music I missed in the near past (the 2000's) that I'm constantly going back and looking at.

I did the same thing with Stereophonics. I'm always digging for new stuff and it's a great feeling when I strike gold.

See, I listen to full albums. But I always listen to them on random shuffle. So I never listen to the same artist twice in a row.

I do that too. Lately I've been on a 70's kick, looking at bands I either didn't know about of didn't care about at the time.

I start getting itchy 3 or 4 songs into an album and want to hear something else.

The only exception to that is Pink Floyd. Some of their albums just sound weird on random (The Wall).

See I have to use the album as a desensitization thing. It's difficult for me to go from Megadeth to The Beatles in just one song. I need an entire album to work out whatever mood I'm in...

That's funny. That's exactly why I do like it. You never know what you'll get. If the song doesn't fit my mood, I just hit skip.

I see both sides of this. I have an ever-expanding playlist on my Amazon cloud called "Awesome Shit" that has a bit of everything. I put that thing on random and I'm set for days. Sometimes, though, it just feels right to listen to an entire album.
