Good point, although I'm guessing someone IS going to dig up the receipts of all the "won't sniff" losers.

Nobody who understands football thought it was a bad deal.

Except we're paying him $25 mil. per year the next 3 years, based on cap hits.

https://overthecap.com/salary-cap/kansas-city-chiefs

Not saying the Chiefs won't restructure it at some point, but as of right now we are responsible for cap hits of $24.75 mil. each year for the next 3 years, 2 of which we are pretty much stuck with. We can get out after 2025 with minimal cap impact ($4 mil. in dead money).

So, that was great that we got him for 'less' last year, but I wouldn't say any of the deals today are making me feel extra good about what we will be paying him for the next 2 years.

Let me ask you a question. Let's say you buy a car for $8000, you put $500 down, and have annual payment the next 3 years of $2500. Did you pay $8000 for the car? You do understand that all of these deals signed by guards have bonuses and money that hits differently each year as well. We got Taylor for 4 years for $80 mil. That now looks like a steal.

I understand economics, thank you.

Let me ask you a question.

Does the big FA O-Line signings you see today make you feel better about the fact that the Chiefs will be paying (barring a restructure) him $25 mil. per year the next couple years.

Because it doesn't make me feel better. I don't think his performance is worth $25 million per year the next 2 years. Do you?

If he continues to play like he did in the playoffs/SB? Yes, absolutely.

Taylor came around strong at the end of the season and playoffs. A lot of us were harsh on him for all of the penalties. I think he has a pro-bowl level season in year 2 for the Chiefs!

Then you don't understand economics...

We won a Superbowl with him balling at RT in the playoffs, and basically after the hose job the NFL gave him early in the year. We don't get him if we paid him a one year deal for $5 mil last year. So yes, I am fine paying him an average annual contract of $20 mil per, as salary cap hits are accounting tricks based on who's due and who's coming up each and every year. We most likely signed Drue Tranquill, Omenihu, and resigned Allegretti by pushing Taylor's cap hits out. You see, we are going to do the same with Chris Jones by only paying him a base salary of approx. $7.5m this year.

I get what you're saying, but MVS came around strong in the playoffs too and none of us wanted him back for the $14 mil. he would cost. CP practically threw a party when he was released, although many thanked him (including myself) for the AFC Title Game against the Bengals last year and this years playoffs. But the reality is we weren't 'stuck with him' like we are Taylor. Taylor is here AT LEAST 2 more years, regardless of how he performs.

With regards to the second part, I certainly hope you are right. I feel like he's gonna need to have at least one to justify that contract. If he could just cut way down on the penalties, that would help a lot.

I guess I can say, in retrospect, his performance this year was consistent with what we paid him (roughly 6 million cap hit)

I think he can play good football. Just needs to focus on discipline and he's got a year in KC under his belt. I don't think he's going to come out and try his Lane Johnson technique too much again after being unfairly targeted for it.
