Censorship Policy

The users of ChiefsPlanet decided many years ago that we would censor a select few objectionable words. We decided the F-bomb, C-bomb, and N-bomb were amongst those. We have since added ANY racial slur to that list. We've also stated that any attempt to circumvent our automatic censor would result in severe punishment.

However, we've not been very consistent. For instance, I've always allowed a partially censored "fuck" to stand. I have never allowed umulats or other such methods of fooling the filter to remain if I discovered them. Our lack of consistency has recently been pointed out and I'd like to solve the issue. Please vote your preference.

Bob Dole just uses White-Out. It takes awhile, but you'll eventually have all the obscenities whited out.

That being typed, I see no problems with the way the filters work now. Although it is weird that shit, cock, pussy, ass, twat, and several other words aren't filtered at all.

Having hangups over words is irrational. I am never offended by mere words, it's the content that can bug me. That said I realize some people are offended by certain language, so I try to moderate myself until I know where the boundaries are.

I am not traumatized. Nor am I shocked. Nor, sadly, am I surprised.

I simply do not like looking at it.

However, as ptlyon pointed out, we used to have the ability to create our own filters. That way, those of us who do not want to see that stuff did not have to see it and did not impose on the innate rights of the potty-mouthed. Forget the search function and give us that option.

Because the purpose of language is to communicate. People have chosen to single out words used as adjectives as offensive despite their meaning and context. It's completely beside the point of language and words, so it's irrational. What is rational is hearing what is being communicated and reacting to that, not to the medium.

The reason they are offended is obvious, they were conditioned to be since children, but that doesn't make it rational. Pretty sure the software's just indexing all of the threads and that the search results will broaden as time goes on. That's what happens whenever forums upgrade their vBulletin software, at least.
