SAN DIEGO - Outside linebacker Shawne Merriman, the 12th pick in the NFL draft, agreed to a five-year deal with the San Diego Chargers on Monday after he missed the first week of training camp. Advertisment Merriman caused a stir when he stayed away from all offseason workouts on the advice of his agent, Kevin Poston, because of concerns he'd get hurt before he got a contract. While many observers expected protracted negotiations, both sides said talks went well. "It was always professional, always cordial," Poston said. "We were able to get it done at Shawne's fair-market value." In a statement, general manager A.J. Smith said the Chargers were "excited to get Shawne here and integrated into our defense as quickly as possible. "The negotiations with Kevin Poston were cordial, professional and it was pleasure doing business with him." By missing offseason workouts, the Chargers felt Merriman, a former star at Maryland, would fall behind in learning the team's 3-4 defense. Poston thinks Merriman will be OK. "The first preseason game has not taken place. He'll be fine," Poston said. "All rookies have to catch up, even those who are in on time." Merriman has been working out in Maryland. Merriman's contract is potentially worth $15.73 million, of which $9 million is guaranteed. The deal was structured so he'll get an early roster bonus of $1,244,000 rather than a signing bonus. He'll get an option bonus of $6.35 million, payable over the second, third and fourth years of the deal. With Merriman's deal done, the Chargers' only unsigned player is All-Pro tight end Antonio Gates, who is seeking a long-term deal averaging between $4 million and $5 million a year. As an exclusive-rights free agent, Gates was tendered a one-year contract for $380,000, but he has not signed that deal.

Rodgers is in: No. 1 pick signs
Training Camp 2005 By Dylan B. Tomlinson PackersNews.com The Green Bay Packers have signed quarterback Aaron Rodgers, their first-round draft pick, General Manager Ted Thompson announced Saturday night. After signing the contract Saturday night, Rodgers immediately headed to St. Norbert College in De Pere to join the rest of the Packers. He will practice for the first time this morning. Before Rodgers had signed, Packers coach Mike Sherman said he wasn’t overly concerned about the four days of practice that Rodgers had missed. “Everything we’ve done so far he did in the minicamps,” Sherman said. “The opportunity to go back and do it again, he’s missed that, but he’s a bright kid. When he gets here, we’ll get him working around the clock and we’ll get him ready to go.” Rodgers is the last of the Packers’ 11 draft picks to sign. While terms of Rodgers’ contract are unknown, it is expected to be similar to the five-year deal that Buffalo quarterback J.P. Losman signed last year. Losman’s deal, with incentives and escalator clauses, could be worth as much as $24.58 million. Since Rodgers isn’t expected to start until Brett Favre retires, negotiations with Rodgers’ agent, Mike Sullivan, were especially difficult. The contract is expected to include an escalator clause that will trigger when and if Rodgers becomes the starter. “Obviously, this is a very difficult contract,” Sherman said. “This is a contract that is (geared) toward the future.” When he reports to camp today, Rodgers will have to share reps with Favre as well as backups Craig Nall and J.T. O’Sullivan. Favre has been participating in only one practice per day, so that may increase Rodgers’ chance to get plenty of reps. The Packers took Rodgers with the No. 24 pick in April’s draft. At one point, he was expected to be taken with the No. 1 overall pick but unexpectedly fell to the Packers toward the end of the first round. Dylan B. Tomlinson writes for The Post-Crescent of Appleton.

I wonder if the Titans are going to sign Pac Man to the rookie minimum with tons of incentives. Especially CONDUCT incentives which includes no posse hanger oners.

Here is some news from the great cold north...the Vikes have signed the #7 pick Troy Williamson.
From vikings.com: The Minnesota Vikings have agreed to terms with 1st-round pick (7th overall selection) WR Troy Williamson. Terms of the deal were not disclosed. Williamson is the highest-drafted WR in franchise history. He becomes the sixth of the Vikings' seven draft picks from the 2005 NFL Draft to come to terms with the team. "I wanted to to thank the Minnesota Vikings coaches, staff, and teammates for their patience during my contract negotiations," Williamson said. "I specifically wanted to point out Rob Brzezinski, Dave Blando, the Wilf family, and my agent for resolving my contract as quickly as possible. I am extremely excited about joining my teammates in Mankato and working hard to help bring the Super Bowl trophy to Minnesota." http://vikings.com/news_detail_OBJEC...Quote8105.html |

I guessed that Rolle would be the last to sign. But that may not happen now that the guy slotted before him (Williamson) has signed.

Jaguars Matt Jones QB Arkansas 5 years, ~$11 million
If this is right he busted the slotting system and he is planned to play at WR instead of QB, sort of weird. |
