Mark Mangino will not return as Kansas football coach, a source close to the situation told Joe Schad of ESPN Thursday night.
The team is scheduled to be told at a meeting Thursday evening.
Athletic director Lew Perkins launched an investigation into Mangino's treatment of players three weeks ago. The Jayhawks won the first five games of the season before going on a seven-game losing streak. Mangino was 50-48 in eight years -- two wins shy of the school record for a coach.
After going 12-1 in 2007 and winning the Orange Bowl, Mangino was given a raise and a contract extension through 2012.

I'm just glad that this chapter has closed. When he exceeded expectations, he really exceeded expectations, and when he didn't live up to expectations, it was a disaster. I do have faith that Lew can get the right guy in place. The football equivalent of Self would be nice, but I'm going to be more realistic. There are some good, young coaches out there that are looking for the next step up, and there are some seasoned coaches out there that would like a chance to show what they can do in a BCS Conference. In the meantime, I'm just going to kick back and enjoy other sports.

Why would anybody even consider that hack? It blows my mind. I wonder what his Arena Football stance would be in college ball?

I'm sorry there is no ****ing way Jim Harbaugh is going to take the job at Kansas with the way he's thought of right now.

Not unless KU is willing to pay a huge huge dollar amount.

Herm would make a great minority interview because you and he and everyone you know knows he will never get hired anywhere in the KC viewing area.

It had to end. Mangino's fate was written weeks and weeks ago.

His comments that he may have lost some people at KU but not the players is pretty clear. Perkins had been conspiring against him for a long time, and Mangino knew it. I wouldn't be surprised if he cut a backroom deal at midseason with whomever his appointee will be.

Perhaps he will hold back on a decision for a while, if he wishes to get more funds in the meantime, to supposedly attract the best candidate.

I'm wondering who would work for someone who would cut the legs off their coach like that, whatever Mangino's failings may have been.

You Kansas fans...yes! Charlie would love to coach football at the University of Kansas.

I think KU would be willing to pay (for the right guy) $2-2.5MM. They were already paying MM $2.3MM, so..........

You'd literally have to make him the highest paid coach in college to get him to take that job.
