*** Official 2016 Royals Repository, Version 1 ***

And so it begins: The Royals' second straight attempt to repeat as AL Champions, and first attempt to repeat as World Series champions.

In this thread, we'll track all non-gameday action. Roster moves, prospect news, etc.

I'll start the thread as usual, with division rivals thoughts. I still like KC to repeat as AL Central champs. Here's how I see the rest of it shaking out:

2) Indians - they have the pitching (and seem to have at least semi-Kluber-ed Cody Anderson, who added 3 mph to his fastball in the offseason). Will the offense hold up? I think this is a team that ends up looking a lot like the 2014 Royals. Francisco Lindor will solidify their IF defense over the full season, and is a help with the bat. I think this club is still a year away from really breaking through - the offense still has a lot of question marks - but I like them to nab a wildcard spot.

Key Player(s): Michael Brantley. When Brantley returns - and how he hits when he does - will be critical to the Indians' ability to be good enough on offense.

Jason Kipnis. Kipnis has been an enigmatic offensive performer for the past several years. If he finally has a good offensive campaign from start to finish, Cleveland could make real noise.

Something of interest to me: For all the acclaim the Twins' farm system gets, I look at the Indians young players, and would much rather have them. Brad Zimmer is going to be a very good all-around CF. Clint Frazier has huge power potential and should arrive soon (2017). Lindor is a young stud.

3) Tigers - Old and dependent on a few stars. If Verlander and Sanchez are healthy and effective, they will be playoff contenders. I'm sure JD Martinez will continue to hit roid-aided bombs. I'm also pretty sure Victor Martinez's days as a huge power threat are gone.

Key player: Justin Verlander. Detroit people would have you believe he figured out how to succeed without his big fastball in September of last year. If that's true, and he returns to dominant form, Detroit will likely contend again.

Something of interest to me: Will Jose Iglesias stay healthy and not try to kill teammates in the dugout? His defense makes the whole group much better.

4) Twins - They won't lead the division or be in playoff contention for as long this year, but Minnesota will avoid the cellar.

Key Player: Miguel Sano. Huge power, huge K rate. Can he continue to drive the ball and be a plus offensive player? Probably needs to cut that 35 percent K percentage to do so.

Something of interest to me: Will teams challenge Sano inside with hard stuff? Working away, away, just lets his power play up. Also - will Mike Berardino continue to be the biggest beat writer homer in MLB?

5) White Sox - still managed by a shitty manager who can't control his clubhouse (The blame for the LaRoche thing really should fall on him, not the GM). Still have a shitty overall defense and a lot of douchebags on the team. They will once again look better on paper than they actually perform.

Key player: Carlos Rodon. The White Sox need Rodon to take a big step forward to make an actual move this season. He's got the talent...

And, as always, here are the prospects.

I wasn't sure what to think about Eibner - and the jury is still out - but that opposite field 2b that Eaton lost in the sun was impressive opposite field power.

He's gone opposite field several times and seems to have serious patience. Assuming he's a good defender (as advertised) , not sure he's much of a downgrade from what Gordo was giving us. Leave Whitt at 2nd and plug Eibner in left and let's roll.

I heard this from a friend of a friend that works for the Stormchasers so take it for what it's worth but he said that Eibner not getting called up had little to do with his play on the field but more of him as a teammate and GMDM worrying about him being a clubhouse cancer.

It's pretty hard for me to believe that anyone can walk into that clubhouse with those dudes and not toe the line, especially coming from the minors. Maybe I'm underestimating the asshole in guys.

That said, if we can't use him, turn him. Get someone we can.

That doesn't seem likely. It's not like he has done much in the minors since before last season on any type of consistent basis to even warrant being called up so it isn't likeky he was being held back.

Get them to throw in $5 million for 2018, and all of a sudden you're looking at a 2 year deal with Shields for $28 million for 17 and 18. I think that's workable for KC, especially if it goes with a cheap internal option to replace Morales at DH in 17 (which nets you $8 million).

It's workable. Question is how much extra you'd have to throw in for the Padres to consider the deal.

I'd be willing to offer them Bonifacio and Zimmer and see if that, plus the salary relief, is enough to get them to bite.

Shields had a rough year last year but has been very solid this season and is once again churning through innings. Adding another guy who can give you 6 2/3 on average when he's on the bump with an ERA in the low-to-mid 3s would be a nice shot in the arm for the 2016 team.

And in 2017, you'd know your rotation starts:

Shields
Kennedy
Lot of question marks after this, especially if Ventura continues to be enigmatic.

With Volquez on a mutual option for 17 and likely to hit the FA market, KC is going to need a veteran arm who can absorb some innings to replace him.
I could ask the Padres to take Infante's along with some mid-tier prospect. I'm okay with sending Zimmer to them if it gets their interest, because I don't think Zimmer is going to amount anything with all those shoulder problems he has been experiencing.

The question is though, are we wanting to take in more salary or break even, whereas it would be more better to get rid of some salary relief without compromising the minors? Because we do need to start thinking about long terms/extensions with Moose and maybe Hosmer. I like Homser, but I am concerned that he most likely will be out of our price range, especially the way he has been performing.

I'd like to find someone who is on a one year deal who is playing for that big contract (i.e. Zobrist, Cueto, etc) that has some extra motivation. I do agree with you that we do need pitchers that can give us innings because our starters has been suspect at best. If the White Sox continues to keep losing and falling out in the standings, I'd be interested to see what the White Sox is asking for Jose Quintana if they're inclined to move him.

I have an extremely difficult time believing this as well, as Dayton as always stressed character as a major factor. It's not like Eibner was a 22nd round guy, he was a 2nd round guy, so Moore most certainly performed his due diligence.

I wouldn't worry too much about that with this group of guys, because Hosmer, Perez, and others will put an end to that. They know what works and what doesn't.

I have confidence they will police those younger kids to let them know what is good and what's not.

That being said, I do find it hard to believe at this point.

Hos could very well be the most sought after position player FA. Boras is undoubtedly telling him this constantly.

Yeah, if he keeps this up and you consider his post season numbers, it would not shock me to see him as a $15-$20 per year guy. I don't care. Pay him.

Edit:

I just looked up salaries for 1st baseman. Hos is getting $15 minimum.
