Jonathan Martin leaves Dolphins after 'breakdown'

An unusual situation is unfolding in Miami, where Dolphins right tackle Jonathan Martin has left the team after suffering an "emotional breakdown" this week.

NFL Media's Jeff Darlington reported Wednesday that Martin is currently seeking help with his family after an incident at the team's cafeteria, according to team sources.

Martin is listed on the team's injury report with an illness, and is doubtful to play Thursday against the Cincinnati Bengals. Fox NFL insider Jay Glazer reported that Martin was the victim of a prank at the cafeteria, becoming enraged enough to "smash his food tray on the ground."

The second-year pro has not been with the team since that time. Darlington reports that Martin immediately sought treatment at a local hospital. He has since left the hospital and is now spending time with his family, according to team sources.

Martin opened the season as the Dolphins' replacement for Jake Long at left tackle. He was moved to right tackle when the team acquired Bryant McKinnie via trade last week. Tyson Clabo is expected to start in Martin's place on Thursday.

he also played on a team with some of the bigger young names in the NFL right now (Sherman, Luck) with one of the better NFL coaches, Harbaugh.

He has Stanford teammates all over. Doug Baldwin, Coby Fleener, etc.

Seahawks, Colts, etc will take a flyer on him, Sherman and Luck and his Stanford pals have defended him in interviews all season, and if they have any clout in their respective team locker rooms (they do, come on) they could easily bang the drum for him and vouch. I think Incognito is an idiot but you're kind of editorializing there. We don't really know what was said.

I just don;t see the managment taking him up. If I were an NFL GM...I wouldn't go near him.

I don't think I'm editorializing at all. I didn't bring up anything Incognito said. I am talking about a front office and coaching staff that decided to go with the "toughen him up" approach instead of handling the situation more delicately. If Incognito's Dad is right and Martin was suicidal, then that is unbelievably dumb advice.

Again... vindicates Incognito's texts, which I figured were joking a lot more than they were racist... But we have to be careful not to assume Martin texted what he did for fun. It's possible he did it just to fit in.

What was the actual advice and what context was it given in?

For wll we know it was said in a joking manner or in an offhanded way. We don't know what was said so to portray it as ordering a code red is just an assumption based on limited information.

Sorry if the word code red tripped you up. No, I didn't mean to imply they were calling for extreme hazing. Based on the stories, Incognito was asked to leave an over-the-top voicemail, coaches asked Incognito to toughen Martin up (and claim he went over the line). It sounded like Incognito was carrying out orders from an incompetent staff. What he actually did... we don't seem to know.

So Ritchie's text count cause he is the perceived bully and since Martin is the perceived victim because he cried wolf his don't. Got it. Never mind the facts pertaining to his failing career or the fact that his parents are attorneys and there was a ton of money to be made here. Move along, nothing to see here.
