The Official 2022 FIFA World Cup Thread

YOUNG AMERICANS
The USMNT was by far the youngest team to qualify for the 2022 FIFA World Cup, garnering valuable experience going through the rigors of World Cup qualifying. Through 14 qualifiers, the USA Starting XI came in at an average of 23.82, almost two years younger than the next closest team, Ghana at 25.67. Together, the other 31 participating teams averaged a Starting XI age of 27.5 through qualifying, nearly four full years older than the U.S. Sources say this is one of the youngest, but most talented teams the U.S. has ever fielded. While they may not win the world cup this year, they may garner the experience needed to make a serious run on home soil in the year 2026 when the World Cup comes back to North America.

Only saw the last 10 minutes or so, what was URU mobbing the ref over after the game ended?

Sort of, but just trying to make a story out of nothing I guess? Them holding on there at the end eliminated them, if that makes the story better lol.

So again, you're just trying to pull shit out of your ass, and you're arguing with someone who thinks this was the right call in the end, however people like you are ignoring the fact that there was never a call on the field before going to VAR and after using VAR they said inconclusive and went with the call on the field, there was no call on the field, dumb ass.
Is Alexi Lalas ****ing your sister?

Not sure what your beef is. I said that I have seen no evidence of a call being made on the field and if no call is made ruling the ball out, it is presumed to be a goal.

Seems like you were believing some bullshit that the Assistant Referee did something with his flag that equaled a ruling deserving deference. Seems like a completely unjust system to give deference to a ****ing flag held by a numbnuts that could not possibly see a ****ing thing.

Are you saying that the Assistant Referee could see that ball relative to the end line from the other side of the goal frame and net and with three players obstructing his view?

They thought they deserved a penalty in the box near the end there... Seeing them act like that makes me more happy they lost.

So I'm just gonna make a suggestion here - maybe DON'T put it in cruise control after 30 minutes against a clearly inferior opponent if you don't control your own destiny?

Uruguay has nobody to blame but themselves.

With the pressure they were putting on Ghana even AFTER Suarez left the field after they learned that SK had pulled ahead, it was clear they could've won this thing 5-0 if they wanted to.

They own this. Don't coast in a spot where goal differential can send you home.

It was particularly ****ing impossible for the assistant referee to rule the ball as crossing the end line with the goal frame and net and three players obstructing any view of the ball relative to the end line.

FOX's American coverage and FIFA did a shitty job and created this situation where a bunch of ignorant mother****ers think a goal kick was ruled on the field and that a review was done by VAR that decided that all the video evidence was inconclusive and that an original ruling of a goal kick was overruled by inconclusive evidence.

FIFA should issue a statement for the benefit of the Americans that had to listen to Alexi Lalas making up shit about the play and what the original call was and what the VAR decided about the conclusiveness of the video evidence and whether there was any change in the original call.

Seems like the true story is that it was a goal and no official ever ruled goal kick and they depended on VAR to decide the matter and VAR decided that the video evidence conclusively proved no goal kick.
They should have discussed more for those who are not aware. With VAR the referees and assistant referees are to let play continue on obvious scoring opportunities, unless a very obvious foul has happened, and let VAR review once the scoring opportunity is complete. Once the obvious scoring opportunity is complete VAR will ping the on field referees with info on if there was something that should have stopped the play or if they need a few seconds to review. Non-interpretive decisions like offside and out of play the referee just goes by what VAR says. If it is something like a foul in the area or a card that needs to be issues the referee will go to the monitor to confirm.

It was not called anything. ALL plays then end up in the back of the net are reviewed. This is why even after what appears to be an obvious goal the referee is waiting to give any signal.

Ghana had some chances too but I agree. I wasn't watching the Portugal game to know, but I wonder if they took the pedal off the gas later in the 2nd when they learned Ghana was down 0-2 and they had no threat of the #1 spot in their group? Ghana winning was the only threat to Portugal today.

Exactly, yet they said "they went with the call on the field because the VAR was inconclusive".

I can get behind simply because the goal ended up in the back of the net, that's what they went with. But if you're wording it in a way where they "went with the call on the field" what was the call?

I cant remember the last time I seen VAR used for a goal without having a call on the field first, can you?

So every score gets, in essence, a de novo sort of review?

The refs have no function other than to relay information provided to them on those?

Interesting.

Every game that has VAR. Most often is just seems like VAR wasn't involved as 99% of the time any part of the play in question, most often a question of offside or not, were early enough in the play that the VAR has already told the referee the play is good.
