Branden Albert trade won’t happen unless he lowers his price

Branden Albert trade won’t happen unless he lowers his price

Branden Albert AP

The much-discussed potential trade of Branden Albert from the Chiefs to the Dolphins doesn’t appear likely at the price Albert is currently seeking.

Although the Chiefs and Dolphins can probably agree on compensation — the Dolphins sending a second-round pick to Kansas City — the hangup is that Albert wants the kind of money that the Dolphins aren’t willing to spend. Specifically, according to Jason Cole of Yahoo! Sports, Albert wants between $8 million and $9 million a year on a long-term deal.

In other words, Albert is looking for the same kind of contract that left tackle Jake Long got from the Rams — the very contract the Dolphins wouldn’t give Long, which is why he left Miami for St. Louis.

If the Dolphins weren’t willing to pay Long that kind of money, it’s hard to see why they’d be willing to give up a second-round draft pick for the privilege of paying Albert that kind of money. So the Dolphins may need to look elsewhere for a left tackle. And Albert may have to settle for playing this season for the Chiefs, making $9.8 million, and hitting free agency next year.

Just as Pioli viewed Cassel as a coup while I viewed it as a massive ****up from the jump.

They've given themselves no fallback now. Eric Fisher or Luke Joekel have to end up as among the best players from this draft and Alex Smith has to end up as a top 10-12 quarterback.

If that isn't what happens, this has all been ungodly stupid, risk-averse horseshit that's going to keep us mired in the shit.

Perhaps they're right. I don't suspect that they will be. But in either event, there's no blaming your predecessors here - this is the bed that they made.

You're right, I'd rather trade Albert, start Fisher or Joeckel and ha ebthe second round pick if we can.

Anybody else buying this?

Sad thing is, we'll probably still have to take Joeckel or Fisher, and hope we can use the threat of a franchise tag next year to force Albert back to the table. Nobody wants Geno at 1.1, including us, and neither of the passrushers are proven commodities.

If we keep Albert for at least a year, however, it would allow us to gamble on Fisher. If Fisher pans out, he becomes the LT, and Albert will become a guard with a the bigger guard contracts in the NFL.

Good. I don't want them to have an excuse for failing. The Jag fans here are all pleased as punch, because they think their team has a built in excuse for not being competitive for a while. Hogwash! Your team should always be trying to compete, and no rebuilding years. No, we're all just trying to learn, or give the rookie some time, years. I don't want to be those Jags fans that take comfort in knowing they won't be good.

I don't think it means that we HAVE to take Joeckel or Fisher. I still think the Chiefs are trying their hardest to trade down....and if Albert isn't traded....then I could see them going with Dion Jordan. It's not like we don't have anything at OT behind Albert.

Phenomenal. Let's take a passrusher that hasn't proven jack shit with the 1.1.

If I'm Reid or Dorsey, and my neck is on the line for this selection, I don't feel good about that gamble. Especially because that means the best-case scenario with Jordan means that I'll have to try and trade Hali next year.

I keep seeing people saying Jordan. When was the last time that a OLB got draft 1.1
I thought Jordan was a DE but evidently not he is a OLB. Pass rusher or not I don't see us or any team spending 1.1 on an OLB that will be behind Hali and Houston.

That is the difference. Albert probably wont even show until week 1. We will spend all training camp with a 2nd stringer playing LT, then Albert will sign right before the season starts or in the final week of preseason and what, people just think hes going to be in NFL game ready shape ready to protect our almost 30 year old injury prone QB? fat chance.
WTF? He signed his tender. He plays for the Kansas City Chiefs for the 2013 season until further notice.

That means he goes to all mandatory practices, starting with OTAs and mini-camp after the draft. He doesn't get to choose to skip or hold out of anything.

Mario Williams (kinda).

3-4 OLB is just as valuable as a pass rushing DE in a 4-3.

This team and this draft is ****ed. Anything the Chiefs do is going to be out of the ordinary because they've painted themselves into a corner.

You should probably be looking to trade Hali next year anyway.

If you think Jordan's legit, you take him. I am a little worried that he can't carry the bulk he'll need to be truly elite without losing some of his speed. Is his ceiling really that much higher than Bruce Irvin's? There's a good chance that's he's just a 1-trick speed-rusher.

That's why, in a draft where everyone's a question mark, the question mark with the biggest impact potential was the way to go.

But....Chiefs. So we'll take a goddamn tackle.

Mario was drafted as a DE not an OLB. That change happened when Wade Phillips went to the Texans.
