The Ravens' use of the hurry up offense

I hadn't watched the Ravens this past season so I was really surprised when I looked up their team stats on offense and found that they had were among the leaders in all the catagories you would desire as a fan.

Having not watched them until last night, I was surprised at how effectively they employed the up-tempo or hurry up offense in the second half. I mean they dismantled the Pats defense when most pundits expected it would be the other way around.

It seems like the NFL is starting to move more and more into this style of offensive pace. Do you think it is something Reid will employ with his brand of the WCO?

I could see it being super effective in KC with the pieces we have in place (sans QB). I also see Geno being the perfect QB to run such an offense because of his ability to whip the ball all over the field. Such an offense would simply terrorize opposing defenses since they couldn't rotate personnel effectively forcing the fat bodies to run gassers while the Chiefs were on the field. As a game would wear on and on, a potent offense would just become more and more powerful.

Interesting, since a Ravens LB called the Pats out for "cheating" for their use of up-tempo, no huddle.

I'm not sure how I feel about this. The new NFL is shifting toward no huddle, up tempo. I think you'll see a few things. Defenses are going to start drafting players that can play every down -- a big reason why I loved the Dontari pick, while I'm not a huge fan of nose tackle anchors. As that happens, I think the up tempo offense will still be effective, but may lose a slight edge. Long story short... we have to incorporate no huddle elements, but the advantage may start to become less so.

But my feeling is, you have to bring in a guy like Geno Smith, and the Ravens had the model right... start him off with a basic, conservative, run-heavy offense and work him in. Don't take the Big Ben approach where you let the guy freelance too often early in his career -- no QB the Chiefs will get will have the body to withstand that kind of abuse. While we'd love to see an offense with a ton of fireworks, if we really want to bring a young kid along, the best route is to lay up early.
