Four questions with Andy Reid ...

Not long before the end of the season, I wanted to ask Andy Reid whether he'd be interested in writing something around the time of the Super Bowl for Sports Illustrated. He said no -- even though in his youth he wanted to be a sportswriter. He thought he might be otherwise occupied. I'd felt he wouldn't take a year off from coaching up to that point, but then I knew if there was a job out there, he'd want it.

Q: So, since you've been named the Chiefs' coach, many people wonder: 'With everything you've been through -- your son Garrett's death by overdose, the turbulent year on and off the field you just went through -- why not take a year off to recharge and get your life back in order?

Reid: "Because I love what I do. Garrett loved what I did. It doesn't feel like work. I didn't want to sit home and not coach. What was I going to do? There was nothing I wanted to do as much as coach football. The thing with Garrett ... it was not very sudden; this was a long, long process. Unfortunately, [drug addiction] is so rampant in America, and people who have gone through it realize that you don't just -- as in my case -- lose a son; you lose a great friend. Now I'm able to bring my other son here. [Reid hired Britt Reid, who also had drug-addiction issues, to be a Chiefs quality-control coach.] Remember, he lost his best friend. But I am so proud of how far he's come. And it says something about him that the three coaches he worked for at Temple wanted him to come with them. The other side of this is working to move on like a man and handle what life throws at you. We're doing that.''

Q: Why the Chiefs? Why not, say, Arizona, or the other places you were linked to?

Reid: "The Hunt family is one of four or five bedrock families in the NFL that I always thought, 'If I'm ever released [by the Eagles], if one of those families calls, I'd listen.' The history here is so rich, the tradition is so rich, the fan base is so strong.''

Q: What's the one overriding thing you take from Philadelphia into this job?

Reid: "I learned to embrace a city in Philadelphia. They'll take you from boyhood to manhood, which they did with me, and that's okay. It's a results business. I got that. As far as the team goes, it's imperative that everybody's pulling in the same direction. That's the only way you can succeed."

Q: What's your take on the talent you inherit?

Reid: "Before I interviewed with the Chiefs, I looked at every snap from every [Kansas City] game this year. Special teams were average. The talent overall, it looked to me like they were transitioning from an older team to a younger one. And I thought, 'With a couple, three drafts, very good things can happen here."

As long as the Colts have a healthy Andrew Luck, they're far ahead of the Chiefs, IMO.

I agree. They fired Arians and hired Haley, only to continue that decline. They have an aging roster and are likely facing the loss of Mike Wallace (not that he did much this past year).

That said, they always seem to hang around until the very end, despite all of their flaws.

The Broncos were really hurt by the loss of McGahee. Their defense, outside of Champ Bailey, is youngish. They have offensive weapons. If they can somehow obtain a solid running back or two, it's hard to count them out with Manning at the helm.

I think the Dolphins are ascending. How far they ascend is a big question mark because their roster is almost as bad as the Chiefs. But they do have the QB in place, so they just need to build around him. Their defense is generally solid each week.

It's "weak" but there are teams on the rise, like the Colts and Dolphins. The Texans won't go anywhere next year, either.

It really is. It's just terrible. Philip Rivers doesn't look right. The Steelers and Ravens are getting old. The Jets are a circus. The conference is wide open. Even though they may just end up forever choking in the playoffs... I feel like the Bengals are the only other team besides the Patriots maybe on the upswing. Aside from the Colts having Luck, obviously... but they have some more work to do on that roster.

The Texans have won playoff games for two straight years. They were really missing Brian Cushing (and lacking depth overall at the LB position). Hell, they won a playoff game with a rookie last year.

I don't think that the Texans, Colts, Patriots, Bengals or Ravens are going anywhere next year, unless of course, they're handed catastrophic injuries.

And the AFC West is Denver's to lose.

He threw 12 TD passes. 12.

For all we know he's no better than Sam Braford.

I guess I look at it this way: If Geno Smith is 80-90% of what Andrew Luck was, the Chiefs would be better. The Chiefs are better than the Colts on every level of both sides of the ball, save for WR/TE where the Colts have more depth but the Chiefs' #1 is better at this point in his career.

That team gave up 350 ****ing rushing yards. That defense is terribad.

How the **** did the Giants hit on 7 players in 2007? They drafted Aaron Ross, Steve Smith, Jay Alford, Zak DeOssie, Kevin Boss, Adam Koets, Michael Johnson, and Ahmad Bradshaw.

Only 2 of those players even play with the Giants anymore.

Here's the Giants hits the past 5 years:

2012: None

2011: None

2010: JPP, Joseph

2009: Nicks, Beatty

2008: Phillips, Manningham (doesn't even play for Giants anymore)

The Dolphins think he's the answer. That's all that matters. I couldn't give a ****.

But I do think they're an ascending team. Plus, they have two second round picks in the 2013 draft, which won't hurt.

It's amazing how close the Chiefs were to winning that game against Indy.

5 years from now we might look back on that as Brady Quinn's finest moment.

Yeah, you're right. All of their drafted players have been cut and are out of the league.

Those are all good teams, but none of them are great. Look at how the Texans got annihilated by Green Bay, New England got completely manhandled by San Francisco. Even Denver got manhandled by Atlanta until the Falcons fell asleep in the 2nd half.

Maybe the Super Bowl will prove differently but the NFC appears to be far superior.

Well, I hope people are as patient with Geno as they apparently are with Tannehill, then.

I've only seen Geno Smith twice and I thought he sucked ass. But if he's 80% of Andrew Luck, maybe they have a chance to win at least 6 games.

It's all speculation at this point.
