BBC co-commentator David Coulthard points out that Lewis Hamilton's wheels were locked so it is "not accurate" to say brakes failed. He adds that Sachskurve, where Hamilton crashed, can catch a driver out but Hamilton is "not in the habit of throwing the car off."

Brake failure is "another gift" for Rosberg - Hamilton

Lewis Hamilton said the brake failure which put him out of qualifying was another “gift” for his team mate in the championship.

“There’s still a decent amount of races to go,” Hamilton reflected while talking to reporters afterwards. “Obviously Nico’s basically got another gift but we’ll do what we can tomorrow.”

"Rosberg's lap was really impressive. Hamilton didn't sound like he knew why he was sixth tenths off [Rosberg] there. Six tenths is a lot."


Germany not Rosberg's home race says Hamilton

Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton says he is not trying to employ mind games against team-mate Nico Rosberg in their championship fight.

Hamilton told British newspapers that this weekend's German Grand Prix was "not really Rosberg's home race."

The Briton said: "To be honest, Nico has never actually been in Germany, so it is not really his home race.

"When I was racing in karting he didn't stand with the grid girl next to a German flag ever. He always stood by Monaco."

29-year-old Rosberg was born in Wiesbaden, Germany, and his mother is German. His famous father Keke, however, is Finnish, and Rosberg has spent most of his life in Monaco and still lives in the Principality.

"I know he has grown up in Monaco so Monaco is his home town," Hamilton insisted.

"He is German, Finnish, Monegasque or whatever, so he will get that support in Monaco and in Germany he has always had great support there. It is always good to beat others on their home turf," he added.

Meanwhile, Hamilton rankled at a reported comment by Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff after Silverstone that, following his Silverstone retirement, Rosberg offered Hamilton a piece of advice, or a 'tip', en route to victory.

"Toto said that?" Hamilton responded, joking: "That's good. Toto likes being on that side of the garage."

Hamilton needs a coach to learn how to control frustration, so that it does not control him. Every week without fail, he takes a swipe at Rosberg. He has for the most part, disrespected teammates his entire career in F1.

I do not understand why fans root for him.

The DRS zone for Sunday’s race at the Hockenheimring will be on the straight leading to the Spitzkehre hairpin, turn six on the circuit.

DRS — Drag Reduction System. A moveable rear wing component (flap) that, when opened, reduces drag permitting higher straight-line speed. For years adjustable bodywork was banned in F1 until DRS was introduced in 2011 as a technology for increasing overtaking. The system is activated electronically such that only a car following another car by less than 1s at a specific point on the track is able to “stall” downforce on the rear wing by using the DRS.

Fast Fact: German Grand Prix Qualifying is super important at Hockenheim, even if overtaking is possible, if the stats are anything to go by. Only three times has the winner come from lower down the grid than the front row since 1987.

Hamilton OK after car catches fire early in qualifying in Budapest on Saturday.

F1 Regulations: There are restrictions on power units (engines) and gear box use. Each driver may use no more than five power units. Should a driver use more than five of any one component he faces a penalty ranging from a five-place grip drop, a 10-place grid drop, or (if the entire power unit has to be changed) starting the race from the pit lane. The components consist of the engine, the motor generator unit-kinetic (MGU-K), the motor generator unit-heat (MGU-H, the energy store (ES), turbocharger (TC) and control electronics (CE).

Hamilton will start Sunday's Hungarian GP from the pitlane as Merc will need to rebuild his chassis following qualifying.

Hamilton is on his fourth power unit and Rosberg has three power units left. Although, I could be wrong.

Hungaroring is traditionally a difficult circuit to overtake - but with the speed advantage of Mercedes this season, Hamilton should make up time in the pits. Nevertheless, Merc cars are proving to be unreliable.

Ricciardo had a damaged rear wing in qualifying on Saturday - Otherwise, he could have placed second or third. Although, Bottas is proving to be a hard charger, so...
