2012 Kansas City Royals Repository Thread

2012 Slogan: Our Time

A better, more accurate 2012 Slogan: It is Finally Next Year
(from Great Expectations)

An alternative slogan if you don't like that one: Someone has to win this crappy division
(from alnorth)

With the beginning of a new year, it is time for the 2012 version of the Royals Repository Thread. We've got Hosmer, we've got a 2011-dominating Gordon, we've got Moose, we've got hopefully a killer bullpen, we've got a stereotypical slow slugging DH, we've got easily one of the best defensive shortstops in the AL, we've got a promising catcher in Salvador Perez. Hell, we've got offense and promising prospects galore.

We do not have starting pitching.

Oh yeah, we've also got this:

Get ready for, (as of January 2012 anyway), one of the most confusing puzzles of a baseball season in recent Royals history. Will they suck? Maybe, I don't know. Will we be given a year of 0.500 baseball? Possibly, I don't know. Will they win the division and go to the playoffs for the first time in 27 years? For the first time in a long time, it could happen, I don't know. 92 losses, 92 wins, or anything in between would not surprise a lot of us.

Everything goes here except Gameday threads and really big news. If a giant story breaks, the Royals achieve some awesome milestone, or we sign/lose a highly significant player/coach/mascot/whatever, then it might also deserve its own thread. This being Chiefs Planet, please do not clutter the board with new threads about trivial Royals news or you will only annoy those who come here for just Chiefs football. If you aren't sure and its not a Gameday thread, it goes here.

What sort of stuff often goes here? SPchief explained it well, so I'll just copy that:

If you locate something of interest.. ANYTHING.. deals on apparel, best ways in/out of the stadium, giveaways, great stories from this season or from seasons gone by, rumors, trades, anything.... feel free to post it here.

If I heard that our soft ceiling was at about $85MM, and we might be able to push it to 90 when needed, I might be able to accept that, because that would be about average. Even something like 80.

70 is not acceptable, unless you are in the midst of a "blow the whole team up because they are all bums and start over" rebuilding year.

You're going to squander a golden opportunity like this? **** you Glass.
Glass has a couple things going against him that a lot of fans don't take into account. First, he is one of the poorest owners in the majors. He's not a multi-billionaire, he's super-rich by our standards but in baseball he barely gets in the door. Second, we're stuck with a horrible TV contract where if we were negotiating it now we'd get easily twice more than we're getting now if not more than that. Cinci is a smaller market and they are rolling in dough from their new deal. Our deal looked good at the time, but we're now stuck in a miserable deal that runs through the end of the F'ing decade.

Thing thats going for Glass that cancels all of that and therefore makes 70 unacceptable: we had a tiny payroll for a long time. The team was profitable, and those profits should have been banked for the day when they'd be needed. At least bridge us to the new national Fox TV contract in 2014 and to the time when the Royals can get fair market on their TV deal.

No kidding. I'm just presuming that part of the story is utter bullshit. I'm more worried about the $70MM "soft ceiling" and hoping that is also false.

Presuming for a moment that 70 was break-even, 2011 alone should pay for getting us to 80 and staying there for about 3 years. Unless DM has some mad master plan to wait until 2014 before going sick.

I don't place much stock in that article...

1) Dutton has been pretty off base so far this offseason (especially on Guthrie)
2) That article suggests deals have been discussed but are pretty far off base.
3) The Royals' cheapness actually helps in this case. Shields and Lester both would be expensive additions, which would require cuts in other areas (Though Hochevar gets you most of the way to either).

I can't see them surrendering a major, major piece like Wil Myers for 2 years of an expensive pitcher.

Only way I could see that working is if Tampa agreed to send more pieces back in return... say Chris Archer and Taylor Guerreri, and maybe a hitting prospect.

Glass's cheapness is annoying. Just another nail in the coffin. I think Kevin Kietzmann mentioned this a while back, but 3/4 guys that run OnGoal have more personal net worth than Glass.

Wish he'd just sell the team. THose guys would do amazing things.

2013 might be a year to dump both Kansas City teams. Amazing that each team could find some differences in ways to alienate the fan base to the point of no return. Simply amazing

I've been saying for 3-4 years that this would be the make or break year for me with Moore/Glass. The team has to be at least in contention for me to be satisfied.

I like the idea of trading surplus prospects. But I will make major noise if they trade Wil Myers for James Shields or Jon Lester IF that doesn't include additional guys coming back.

Presuming they want to buy. Glass is probably more "poor" than "cheap", but if the SportingKC guys were willing to buy the team, he should sell. He'd triple his investment and ensure wealth and security for his family.

If we don't have a local buyer though.... he sorta has to hang on till we do.

Myers is not untradable to me. Trading Myers (and seeing Frenchy play RF again) would hurt, but if we got a fair return that helped us compete in 2013, I'd swallow hard, remember the old saying that "prospects are nice, but flags fly forever", and accept it. The deals mentioned in Dutton's article are crap. If thats all we can get for Myers, then we should do our best Texas Rangers impression, load up on offense, do the best we can to replace Hoch with whoever, and then pray.

Yeah. I heard about a potential blockbuster with the Rays that would have involved both Myers and Hosmer for Shields, Hellickson, Chris Arche, Jak Huk-Lee and another piece.

Myers is tradeable IF the return includes young, controllable pitching that helps in 2013 and in the future.

3 questions. Two are serious, and the other really isn't. But I'll ask them anyways.

1. What is a deal you guys WOULD make for Myers?
2. What would be a good deal for Hosmer?
3. From Al's statement on the Texas impression...why not offer Josh Hamilton 2 years and $45 million?
