Also, who says basketball is "secondary" to football anyway? You? Lou Holtz? Random Mizzou fans? I doubt you even know simple facts about the economics of either sport. March Madness is vastly more popular than the Bowl games are. Which is probably why football is about to drop the bowl games to go to the basketball model.
I'm talking about greasing palms and lining pockets to secure high end recruits. D1 athletics and all. Football is king in this country numbskull.

I'm sorry, were you babbling something about a powerhouse giving fans a "shit sandwich" of home games?

1. W. Kentucky 91
2. Florida Atlantic 137
3. Mississippi 24
4. Mississippi State 42
5. Texas A&M 3
6. Western Carolina 196
7. Auburn 81

I'll let you take a guess who's home schedule that was. The last team on the list should be the give-away.

it's absolutely secondary. If you are insinuating that it is still a very profitable venture (in spite of being a secondary sport to football) particularly for the blue bloods there is no question you would be right about that. If you are insinuating it isn't secondary to what schools are making off football then that is a patent absurdity.

An anecdotal example, Duke brought in $25 million (very impressive) in revenue off men's hoops while Alabama rake in a smidge shy of $82 million. Hence, secondary to football. Those #'s of course are at the top of the spectrum.

Also March Madness is comprised of 63 games whereas the Super Bowl is one, not really an apt comparison.

Now you have done it. Prepare for about a 100 posts from Hypocritson about how Tier 3 revenues are what drives college athletics, and how KU has the greatest Tier 3 deal in the history of mankind.

This is the kind of ignorance I was referring to. The $770m from March Madness is taken by the NCAA and used to fund 98% of its operations, as well as feed the mouths of 200+ D1 athletic programs who would die without it. Football money is not taken by the NCAA, is kept by schools and conferences.

If we took the $770m and divided it by the 63 games played in the NCAA tourney, that's $12m/game. KU played 6 games last year, meaning they should've gotten 36M simply based on performance. But basketball funds everything, football funds yourself. Hence your (skewed) numbers.

The total money, tv ratings, fan attendance, ad revenue, etc etc generated from basketball & football is actually much more similar than you think and that's the point folks like you continue to miss.

We're not talking about the NFL here, which is of course the undisputed king of sports in America. We're talking college sports.

Very true but the point remains the same. The example you referenced is not the way it's divied up in football either in terms of post season scratch. Take the "$36 million dollar #, less expenses, and spread them among their 10 cohorts same as postseason bowl games. Now you'd have to add in what the others did too in the league for an apples to apples comparison but that $770 million in sum ain't comin' close to making up the difference which w/o it is roughly a third of what football generates.

The numbers off the link are from 2011.

This isn't a debated point outside the circles of some (most know better) fans of basketball schools.

Also, in terms of the NFL the article the other dude posted compared the two hence my reply.

80% of Neb fans spend basketball season making plans for the spring game. I've never met one that gives a crap about hoops. It's the quintessential football school.

Your link doesn't work for me. Forbes cites your 1/3 of revenue (which is very different than 1-to-3 ratio as you stated) here http://www.forbes.com/sites/sportsmo...l-conferences/ but, as you can see, the ratio rises as the conferences get smaller. Once you get past those containing the 120 schools in D1 football, I'm going to guess basketball funds more than football does based on the NCAA shared revenue model.

If the BCS conferences kept all the Tourney revenue, as they should, the ratio would probably rise to 40% or so. (That wouldn't be even par with football, but it's in the ballpark). A 40-60 ratio of total revenue makes it fair to call the sports peers. We know basketball is important and makes lotsa money. If not, football schools wouldn't be throwing 2M+ salaries to guys like Lon Kruger, Frank Martin,Anthony Grant or Thad Matta.

Sorry about the link. It is to a website where you filter for the $ data you want. This is the site,

http://ope.ed.gov/athletics/index.aspx

That should get you there and then you can look for whatever you want. I filtered for D1 schools and searched for aggregate #'s since everything's divided differently between the two sports, football revenue roughly $2.9 billion, basketball, $1 billion. Adding in the tourney takes that number to $1.7 which is pretty doggone close to the split you just referenced.

No one's saying it isn't important. Well I'm not anyway. But it isn't on footballs level. A 60/40 split amounts to huge dollars at this level. To say that college basketball is as big as college football just isn't true, hence secondary. To say that it isn't big in it's own right would also not be true. Otherwise the schools like KU and Indiana and Duke, etc that don't give a crap about football wouldn't be able to afford to do so. Which we all know ain't the case.
