I like AB's a lot. Brisket is good, ribs are sometimes really good/sometimes average. Fries just like my mom used to make.
My favorite ribs in the city are at Jack Stack. Great food there, despite the upscale environs. Oklahoma Joe's is my favorite place overall in KC. Thier pulled pork is pretty bad-ass, and thier wednesday special Burnt Ends platter is great. (AB's seems to fake half of your order when you get burnt ends. It seems the past 4 times I've ordered burnt ends there, half of them were just cubed beef.) |

Then different interests opened Smokestack in Martin City. And they peacefully co-existed until MC Smokestack started branching out to Metcalf and downtown KC. Original Smokestack asserted it's trademark primacy and won. Haven't been down to the area of the original Smokestack, but I think I heard it moved slightly west over onto Wornall. EDIT - from the article above it looks like; 1 - there's some discrepancy whether Smokestack asserted it's trademark or Jackstack back off of it's own accord, and 2 - the Wornall restaurant is not where the 71Hwy location moved to, but a sister location that outlived it.

Let me be more specific; the Smokestack in Martin City became Jack Stack, IIRC.

Jack Stack has the best beans in town without a doubt.
If I want the best BBQ, Jack Stack is the only place I'll consider; however, Oklahoma Joe's (gas station) Smokey Joe sandwhich is one of the best BBQ sandwhiches I've had. AB's is good, but only the original. Gates is okay, but dont' care much for their sauce or the screaming at me. You can help me by shutting the fuck up and taking my order.

I grew up eating Quicks and Rosedale. I do like me some Jack Stack though. I've only eaten at AB's a couple times and really enjoyed it. Fries are really good.
