Another one of those "WTF do they need those for?" Moments

USDA gearing up for what? Airport inspectors need a machine gun to ward off bad bugs ? Meat inspectors under risk of zombie attack on killing floors?

A May 7th solicitation by the U.S. Department of Agriculture seeks “the commercial acquisition of submachine guns [in] .40 Cal. S&W.”

According to the solicitation, the Dept. of Agriculture wants the guns to have an “ambidextrous safety, semiautomatic or 2 round [bursts] trigger group, Tritium night sights front and rear, rails for attachment of flashlight (front under fore group) and scope (top rear), stock collapsible or folding,” and a “30 rd. capacity” magazine.

They also want the submachine guns to have a “sling,” be “lightweight,” and have an “oversized trigger guard for gloved operation.”

USDA is responsible for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP aka food stamps). IMO, when the inevitable collapse of the warfare/welfare state happens, there will be hungry, violent mobs at the doors of USDA/SNAP offices demanding free food. This looks like common sense preparation for repelling hungry, violent mobs.

So we're going to shoot hungry people? That doesn't seem like the right answer.

Follow the money... Piggybacking off a reddit comment, it's probably connected to grant / allocated money to enforce drug laws in federal forests.

IIRC, Forest Service falls under USDA, and they handle quite a bit of law enforcement.

Yep the same folks placing signs in the National Parks asking you to not feed the animals so they won't become dependent on handouts also is responsible for handing out food to the poor.

On a serious note I do find it troubling that we are arming every freaking Govt. entity to the teeth. What troubles me more is the sheeple that insist on limiting what the average citizen should be armed with.

well, surely you'd agree that some liimits are necessary...

bazookas and tanks might be a bit much...

"assault rifles", not so much...

any semi-automatic rifle can be used to kill lots of people, it's just that the mass murders tend to favor military type weapons which gives them a bad name...
