2012 Kansas City Royals Repository Thread

2012 Slogan: Our Time

A better, more accurate 2012 Slogan: It is Finally Next Year
(from Great Expectations)

An alternative slogan if you don't like that one: Someone has to win this crappy division
(from alnorth)

With the beginning of a new year, it is time for the 2012 version of the Royals Repository Thread. We've got Hosmer, we've got a 2011-dominating Gordon, we've got Moose, we've got hopefully a killer bullpen, we've got a stereotypical slow slugging DH, we've got easily one of the best defensive shortstops in the AL, we've got a promising catcher in Salvador Perez. Hell, we've got offense and promising prospects galore.

We do not have starting pitching.

Oh yeah, we've also got this:

Get ready for, (as of January 2012 anyway), one of the most confusing puzzles of a baseball season in recent Royals history. Will they suck? Maybe, I don't know. Will we be given a year of 0.500 baseball? Possibly, I don't know. Will they win the division and go to the playoffs for the first time in 27 years? For the first time in a long time, it could happen, I don't know. 92 losses, 92 wins, or anything in between would not surprise a lot of us.

Everything goes here except Gameday threads and really big news. If a giant story breaks, the Royals achieve some awesome milestone, or we sign/lose a highly significant player/coach/mascot/whatever, then it might also deserve its own thread. This being Chiefs Planet, please do not clutter the board with new threads about trivial Royals news or you will only annoy those who come here for just Chiefs football. If you aren't sure and its not a Gameday thread, it goes here.

What sort of stuff often goes here? SPchief explained it well, so I'll just copy that:

Quote:
If you locate something of interest.. ANYTHING.. deals on apparel, best ways in/out of the stadium, giveaways, great stories from this season or from seasons gone by, rumors, trades, anything.... feel free to post it here.

I'm hoping for the best for the Royals here, but I'm expecting the worst.

And will it feel like a push for anyone else if we trade Myers and trot Frenchy out there yet again, regardless of who is in our trade-for cross hairs?

That increases his value a bit, a Myers for Holland+someone else could be close to par.
It makes sense, too, that the Rangers would then trade Myers for Upton.

(Although, why not just hang on to Myers? Go with what you know, albeit inconsistent, rather than gamble that Myers is less than an all-star.)

Texas is getting Upton.

It's not Texas that is taking a puzzlingly small return here, it's Arizona.

When you put it in the context of the 4-way deal, Cleveland is getting about what it should get for what it's giving up and the Rangers are getting about what they should get for what they're giving up.

The team that is getting fleeced is Arizona and they're getting fleeced at the Royals benefit.

Arizona has the Allan Baird goggles on. They want/need a shortstop and that is what they want for Upton. Same shit when Baird traded Beltran. He wanted a 3rd base prospect.

I could not describe the joy I would feel if the Royals managed to land Derek Holland while surrendering only Christian Colon and Jason Adam.

Hell, if necessary, send Yordano Ventura (or Mike Montgomery if they like him and think they can fix him - he and Bauer are former high school teammates and good friends) Arizona's way as well. Still would be a good deal for KC.

Then wait for the Hamilton dust to settle and demand Andrus from the Rangers.

Do they honestly think they won't be able to get Asdrubal freakin' Cabrera and a prospect of Colon's caliber if they don't do this deal now? Let the deal stew - you'll still be able to get this deal or something substantially similar in a month. If you can't get the Rangers to bite on Andrus, this deal will still be there.

This is just stupid.

I changed my mind, I'd still happily take Holland and presume he's one of my best 3 pitchers, but he's not quite as valuable as I first thought. His away babip in 2012 was .236, it might not all be the Rangers ballpark, some of that away split may have been luck.

Colon + someone else or bullpen guy may be enough.

Let's not suck his dick based on varying reports of a possible trade that may go down some time in the future.

Pitchers can control BABIP a little more than hitters, so while he's going to normalize a little, it is possible that he was doing a nice job of pitching on the black when he needed to.

Besides, a great deal if Holland's value is derived from his strikeout potential and diminishing walk rate.

His career away BABIP is .275 (.314 at home). Not freakish at all.

And in 2011, his best year, his split was .274/.343.

.236 is not sustainable, though. Some pitchers might have a "normal" babip of .270 or so, this is too low to be real.

He's still good, but not so good that lesser prospects couldn't get him.
