Junior Seau dead, probable suicide

North County Times reporting Seau "found dead by a housekeeper of a gunshot wound to the chest."

Junior Seau Dead Cops Investigating Shooting

Cops are currently at Seau's home just outside San Diego. Seau was 43-years-old ... and leaves behind 3 kids and an ex-wife.

Seau was a beast in the NFL -- skyrocketing to fame thanks to his explosive play with the San Diego Chargers, Miami Dolphins and New England Patriots. The USC standout was selected in the first round of the NFL draft in 1990 and played in the league for 20 years.

Seau was involved in a car accident back in 2010 when he drove his SUV off a cliff in Carlsbad, CA hours after he was arrested for allegedly attacking his girlfriend. Seau later said he was not trying to kill himself ... insisting he had fallen asleep at the wheel.

I get this. I kind of want to take the same attitude. Particularly in a couple of situations that hit closer to home where I saw the fallout and pain that it causes. But for whatever reason I always end up feeling more pity than anger. Maybe giving too much benefit of the doubt, but assuming that the person who offed themselves must have been in a personal hell I can't understand.

its a ghoulish topic, but a lot of people have academically studied suicide. Specifically, the aftermath for survivors.

One might think that if you have "failed" at suicide, then the underlying condition (depression or painful illness) continues, and you'll just try again, and indeed, some people do. There are definitely a few people who make the decision to die, and are determined to do so (usually painful illness).

Most people don't. This may be a bit disturbing to think about, but often when someone tries to overdose and wakes up, or pulls the trigger and hears a click, or jumps off a bridge and lives, many times they don't redouble their effort. They go back home (after recovery if necessary), go to bed, and go to their job the next morning. Most of them go on with their lives and never try to kill themselves again. Most survivors who jump off the golden gate bridge regret jumping as soon as they are in the air.

For those who are depressed, the thought of suicide is fleeting. Those who give in to that temptation are stupid, selfish, and weak-willed.

To anyone who thinks depression is a crutch, and discounts its severity: Consider yourself lucky. Speaking as someone who, while I don't have it myself, has been around it and its trail of devastation for decades now, I hope you never have reason to change your mind.

We're excusing people for killing themselves. That's never going to be okay with me - ESPECIALLY when you leave children behind. I know depression is awful.

Why would I shoot myself? I have children, family, and people who care about me. If I have NOTHING else, that's enough.

DT didn't ignore the emotional well-being and future of his 3 children, nor did he turn his back on his brother and mother.

Junior was coherant before his death. He wasn't ready to be fitted for a straight-jacket. Depression is not an excuse, if being depressed quashes any concern someone might have for their broken-hearted family, then they were a horrible person.

We don't know this, though. No one does. I hesitate to even enter this argument because it's a brutal one. But the dude almost drove off a cliff a while back.

That's the catch. Yeah there is a selfish side to it. Then there's a side to it where anyone who has the ability to stick a gun to themselves and pull the trigger is obviously suffering some sort of severe mental problem. I don't understand how people argue otherwise. There is nothing about this that should be considered normal behavior.

And i'm just a joe... Seau wasnt going to be bereft any business opportunities or great life with the nationwide support structure there for him,, whatever his financial difficulties may have been couldnt be THAT bad, then of course the family angle... leaving them like that... put a gun to your heart & pull the trigger, such a crazy thought.

But do i feel empathy & sadness for him, definitely.
