2012 Kansas City Royals Repository Thread

2012 Slogan: Our Time

A better, more accurate 2012 Slogan: It is Finally Next Year
(from Great Expectations)

An alternative slogan if you don't like that one: Someone has to win this crappy division
(from alnorth)

With the beginning of a new year, it is time for the 2012 version of the Royals Repository Thread. We've got Hosmer, we've got a 2011-dominating Gordon, we've got Moose, we've got hopefully a killer bullpen, we've got a stereotypical slow slugging DH, we've got easily one of the best defensive shortstops in the AL, we've got a promising catcher in Salvador Perez. Hell, we've got offense and promising prospects galore.

We do not have starting pitching.

Oh yeah, we've also got this:

Get ready for, (as of January 2012 anyway), one of the most confusing puzzles of a baseball season in recent Royals history. Will they suck? Maybe, I don't know. Will we be given a year of 0.500 baseball? Possibly, I don't know. Will they win the division and go to the playoffs for the first time in 27 years? For the first time in a long time, it could happen, I don't know. 92 losses, 92 wins, or anything in between would not surprise a lot of us.

Everything goes here except Gameday threads and really big news. If a giant story breaks, the Royals achieve some awesome milestone, or we sign/lose a highly significant player/coach/mascot/whatever, then it might also deserve its own thread. This being Chiefs Planet, please do not clutter the board with new threads about trivial Royals news or you will only annoy those who come here for just Chiefs football. If you aren't sure and its not a Gameday thread, it goes here.

What sort of stuff often goes here? SPchief explained it well, so I'll just copy that:

Myers is awful defensively and a windmill at the plate. Let's not act like he doesn't have flaws.
ok so... you are admitting in this post that you have no ****ing clue what you are talking about.

windmill? did you read the article in which he explained why he had more SO this year?

he played something like 4 positions last year, well.

framework?

there are NO LESS THAN 50 posts in this thread explaining the brokedicks that could go to pay sanchez.

estimating 6 years 70 mil+

probably almost as good.

steven, what you don't understand apparently is that those of us criticizing the trade weren't on board with waiting another two years to win. There was a clear path to winning this year and keeping our best offensive power prospect in the fold for another six years.
I think this trade hinges on if we had any chance to actually sign a guy like Sanchez. If we didn't, then this trade is a solid long term play by Moore. If we did, then it was a poor trade. Sadly we may never know the answer.

Well, I like where the Royals are today at the major league level more than I did yesterday. It really all comes down to winning BOTH this year and next. If they can't and Shields walks, it's inexcusable. We're talking 90+ wins and a wild card at the very, very least.

Another angle on this - Is this GMDM's way of giving a big "**** you" to his tightass owner that doesn't want to loosen the purse strings but still want to be competitive? I mean face it....under the restrictions of a "70 million dollar cap", DM's means of fielding a competitive team was quite limited.

Yeah, that's wrong.

Sanchez is not as good as Shields, though the former is still a very solid pitcher. Not elite, but an average 2 or high-end 3.

15 per for 6 years probably gets the deal done. Since Sanchez is theoretically entering his best years--he's 28--I'd be comfortable with a 6-year commitment. And we keep a player in Myers who projects to be, at worst, a good RF.

If you believe in the numbers, the Royals spent more money (Hoch, Davis, and Shields) to be a worse team in '13 than they would have been if they'd kept and played Myers.

Before this trade, the staff in no way resembled the '99 Royals, so this is a moot point. Even a second-tier FA add would have been more sensible than what DM has done.

Those praising the trade either don't understand or don't believe in statistical analysis. We know that both apply to DM.

Now that we've completed the trade, though, it's time for there to be expectations, and this means that the Royals must make the playoffs in '13.

yeah I am reading about 100 million. Do you honestly think cheap ass David Glass is going to fork out $100 million over 5 years to one player? That would be almost half of his $57 million dollar payroll lol

Players that are good defensively at one position don't move around to four others in a season. Myers had 591 PAs and 140 Ks at the AA/AAA level, he can't explain that away. What do you think that translates to at the major league level?

Btw, The Royals will have to overpay to sign Anibel Sanchez and he is reportedly asking for 6-7 years for between $15-18 million per.

Shields is better than Sanchez, tho sanchez is a couple of years younger.

A lot of people, for some strange reason, think we can sign Anibal Sanchez. We can't, and its not necessarily about the money.

Whatever we offer, the Texas Rangers can easily top. And if their offer is anywhere close to ours, he'll pick Texas.

Thanks. If it is around 15 million that would seem doable to me.

No, it does not.

There are at least 2 teams who want to, and can, match our offer, and Sanchez will pick them over us.

The payroll just went over $80MM. Even if we believe that $70MM is the breakeven, that'll go to $95MM in 2014 when the new Fox, TBS, and ESPN contracts kick in.

Committing 20% of your payroll to one player is a lot, but we've done it before. The years are more frightening than the AAV.
