I don't believe for a moment that a true "search" in underway. Clark has been working on this change for some time, and he knows the endgame.

If he doesn't, if he made this bold announcement without near certain knowledge of who the next coach will be, Clark is one recklessly stupid individual.

I don't believe that Hunt is the riverboat gambler type, but we'll see.
So let's make a list:

It pretty much has to be either Cowher, Billick or Gruden - unless I'm forgetting someone.

If Clark knows the endgame, as you say, that eliminates guys like Andy Reid and Chip Kelly - they wouldn't be interviewing elsewhere.

And if Clark knows the endgame, why the charade? Why not hire the guy and get to work on the most important draft in the franchise's history?

If they like Rivers or Cutler.

If I'm a HC, I'd rather draft my own.

There's been chatter about all of the above, but nothing has happened yet.

If a coach isn't in place by the end of next week, it's probably worth ratcheting up the concern level a few notches because Hunt might be in over his head.

Based on his words, he seems to be shooting for one of the big names that you list initially. I can't fathom that he's taking a wild shot, either, since men like Hunt are often conservative by nature.

Say what you will about Rivers and Cutler, but some guys are going to be looking for a win-now situation - and both SD and Chicago are in that position.

I agree his words seem to indicate a Cowher-type hire.

So why wait?

And what happens when he can't talk Cowher, Billick or Gruden out of retirement?

Rivers is interesting. So talented and (previously) productive, yet he looked truly bad this past season. Not sure what the hell is wrong with him.

As for your last point, OTWP, I don't think there's any type of charade at this point. There's simply no chance that a coach will be fired at 10:00 AM, with a new coach introduced at 2:00 PM. Right or wrong, there's a level of unprofessionalism in that approach.

By this time next week, I think there's a great chance we know the next HC for the Chiefs.

If it's one of these three, Hunt knows the answer right now. If he doesn't, he's dumb as ****.

At this point, lawyers would be drawing up papers; it's long past time to make a sale.

Who else could it be?

As you said, Clark would be foolish to take this approach and not know the end result.

That leaves guys like Kelly and Reid out - they aren't going to waste other organizations' time by interviewing if they already have some semblance of an agreement with Clark.

It just scares the shit out of me, because common sense says he's putting all his eggs in the Bill Cowher basket - and is going to be ****ed if he's turned down.

Holmgren, which seems about as exciting as watching old people ****.

It's funny, his overall record as a HC is very good, but I look at him as such a "meh" candidate that it's not even funny. Dude could be the king of the 9-7 record.

He's an average coach, and a below average personnel guy.

Not to mention, dude is 64 years old. I want someone that's going to be here a while.

Reid would be a much better choice in my view, given Clark's criteria. Like you, I don't want Holmgren in KC, but that's a guy who might be looking to get back in the game to attempt to leave on his terms.

With Reid likely comes Heckert and some mediocre drafts.

Bottom line, by painting himself into a corner, are we really getting the best candidate?

Of the guys you and I have spent the last 10 minutes talking about, do any of them really excite you?

Not especially. Philosophically, I think it's best to try to look forward in terms of coaching potential. However, I can understand the logic behind Clark's approach because of how disastrous the Pioli hire has been.

That fat **** has taken the franchise to new lows and completely alienated the fan base. While we can debate the "excitement factor" with respect to the Billicks or Cowhers of the world, the fact is that these guys at least restore a baseline of performance and overall respectability, both in the league and with the fans.

It's a conservative play on Clark's part, and I would wager that he believes he's not in a position to gamble based on how bad Pioli was at his job.

I agree that Pioli still being here is meaningless. Everyone is nervous that he's going to somehow be back at his old job, but what's being ignored is that Scotts old job isn't going to exist like it did before. There won't be a GM calling any shots. The GM won't be leading the charge, talking to the media, saying what HE wants to do. Hunt gave Pioli the wheel, and he drove the car into a ditch. Now, Hunt is saying, you can sit in the passenger seat and play with the radio, unless the new driver hates your taste in music, if so you can just get out.
