2012 Kansas City Royals Repository Thread

2012 Slogan: Our Time

A better, more accurate 2012 Slogan: It is Finally Next Year
(from Great Expectations)

An alternative slogan if you don't like that one: Someone has to win this crappy division
(from alnorth)

With the beginning of a new year, it is time for the 2012 version of the Royals Repository Thread. We've got Hosmer, we've got a 2011-dominating Gordon, we've got Moose, we've got hopefully a killer bullpen, we've got a stereotypical slow slugging DH, we've got easily one of the best defensive shortstops in the AL, we've got a promising catcher in Salvador Perez. Hell, we've got offense and promising prospects galore.

We do not have starting pitching.

Oh yeah, we've also got this:

Get ready for, (as of January 2012 anyway), one of the most confusing puzzles of a baseball season in recent Royals history. Will they suck? Maybe, I don't know. Will we be given a year of 0.500 baseball? Possibly, I don't know. Will they win the division and go to the playoffs for the first time in 27 years? For the first time in a long time, it could happen, I don't know. 92 losses, 92 wins, or anything in between would not surprise a lot of us.

Everything goes here except Gameday threads and really big news. If a giant story breaks, the Royals achieve some awesome milestone, or we sign/lose a highly significant player/coach/mascot/whatever, then it might also deserve its own thread. This being Chiefs Planet, please do not clutter the board with new threads about trivial Royals news or you will only annoy those who come here for just Chiefs football. If you aren't sure and its not a Gameday thread, it goes here.

What sort of stuff often goes here? SPchief explained it well, so I'll just copy that:

Quote:
If you locate something of interest.. ANYTHING.. deals on apparel, best ways in/out of the stadium, giveaways, great stories from this season or from seasons gone by, rumors, trades, anything.... feel free to post it here.

Neither Lamb nor Montgomery has demonstrated the level of success Wheeler has had.

We need more minor league prospects because we can then use those prospects to create a viable package for a ML starter.

Stockpile as much minor league talent as possible and then move it. We've done a nice job of the former and a terrible job of the latter, which might well be the failing that gets DM fired.
Although he doesn't make it pretty teams will still want him. Most teams don't have the depth and talent in the bullpen like we do.

And you hit on what I was thinking without typing it which is that what good are more prospects for us if we don't turn them into ML starters which we can't seem to do because Dayton won't part with them.

Do other cities have two of their GMs completely obsessed with one guy even they aren't performing the way we have it here with Cassel and Frenchy/prospects? Its simply maddening.

But they have/had the tools right? I just want ML starters is all. But either way if he is really good prospect the way it seems, I don't know that they would want anything we could or would offer in addition to Broxton.

When the bullpen pitches the most innings in the AL bad things will happen. Anyone that has extensively watched sees the abilities our guys have. If we weren't having to use Teaford, Adcock, and Mendoza has starters they would also be part of the bullpen adding depth and stability.

I'm not worried about style points, but the peripheral numbers with Broxton are pretty bad.

WHIP 1.408---OKish
SO/9 6.3---Oh shit.
BB: 14 SO: 23---Not good

He has a shit ton of runners on base, all the time. His luck will normalize, and he's going to be in deep shit. One of the things that's been helpful for the Royals, ironically enough, is that Broxton has been our fourth or fifth best reliever.

I'm hoping the duct tape holds and we move his ass because his gas can is starting to wiggle out of his back pocket.

Made a bet with a friend that just is a major homer when it comes to Broxton. I bet that brox's era will be at 4. or higher by seasons end. Would you take that? I just feel he's been extremely lucky, cant last

That might be close simply b/c of the number of opportunities. Over 3 for damn sure, and he's lucky the entire stadium didn't catch on fire last night. Bases loaded no outs and gets by allowing only one? Lucky as a SOB.

Yeah last night I was shocked. I just hope gets traded by the deadline. His whip is 1.41 now. I only agreed cause the dude was ripping soria and saying Broxton is better this year than Soria last year. Even though i brought up tons of facts that say otherwise except his era currently and total saves so far. The rest of brox is shit

Are you speaking of Broxton or the team here? As a team we are middle of the pack tied with two others for 6th. Broxton is second in the AL with 4 but the guy with the 17th most blown saves has three...

From Rany's update today (www.ranyontheroyals.com):

As recently as 2 or 3 years ago, I felt that the Glass family was spending a reasonable amount of money on major-league payroll, particularly given how much they were spending to sign amateur talent. But this season, the Royals’ payroll is roughly $64 million. That’s almost identical to their payroll in 2008, and more than $10 million LESS than their payroll in 2009 and 2010. Given how much industry revenues have increased the last few years, AND given that the Royals are now prohibited from spending as much money in the draft and in Latin America, that’s inexcusable.

Team. The stat I just saw was that last night was your 11th as a team, tied with a couple other teams for 2nd in the AL.

I'm having trouble thinking of many AL bullpens that are better than KC's. Baltimore has far-and-away the best in the AL, but apart from them?

There for awhile our over worked bullpen had one of the better ERAs in the AL.

Broxton is a minor blip, in an otherwise pretty salty bullpen.
