Jumbo Packages
I've been reading the very few limited sources there are out there about Merritt, our 12th and final pick of the NFL Draft.

The guy, all sources acknowledge, has no role downfield. He registered less than 20 catches in his entire career at a Div I-AA school or whatever Central Florida is.

But he does have value in what's called a "jumbo package."

Considering that Herm's trumpeted Merritt's "unbelievable" blocking abilities, I assume that if Merritt makes this team, it's as a blocker in a "jumbo package."

Well, that's good and everything.

But the football n00b in me isn't terribly familiar with what jumbo packages are.

Can anybody here disabuse me of my ignorance?

I think they're looking at him as a Jason Dunn replacement. He can be used in jumbo packages or in any ordinary 2 TE sets.

And UCF is in Conference USA, they are a div 1 team.

But what is a jumbo package?

Is that one of those max protection things where you set up all your blockers, send one receiver deep and give your quarterback like 30 seconds to wait for the receiver to get open?

Jumbo packages refer to heavy formations usually using 3 TEs. Often Olinemen are put in at TE. They are used in goaline or short yardage situations. Mostly for running plays, not typically for max protect passing.

Here's a jumbo package. No fullback, but THREE tight ends. The Chiefs lined up Svitek, Dunn together and motioned Gonzalez to the same side. Result - 37 yard run. Herm popped a woody.

Maybe if he is such a great blocker they are trying to make him a project and convert him to gaurd like they did with Brian Waters.

Central Florida is a Divison I-A team man. They were Conference USA champs, played Texas darn close. They are probally the next Big East team. Other than BYU and Utah, they are the closest to being a BCS team that isnt currently.
