Actress Ellen Page publicly came out as gay Friday evening, while giving a speech at Time to THRIVE, a national LGBTQ youth conference held in Las Vegas.

"I'm here today because I am gay," Page told the assembled crowd, which responded with a standing ovation and a long chorus of cheers.

"Whoo!" said Page, before continuing:

"And because maybe I can make a difference. To help others have an easier and more hopeful time. Regardless, for me, I feel a personal obligation and a social responsibility.

I also do it selfishly because I'm tired of hiding and I'm tired of lying by omission. I suffered for years because I was scared to be out. My spirit suffered, my mental health suffered, and my relationships suffered. And I'm standing here today with all of you on the other side of that pain."

Page is most famous for becoming pregnant by her awkward classmate Michael Cera, and for invading the dreams of a stranger alongside Leonardo DiCaprio, neither of which happened in real life, because she is an actress.

After her speech, the Human Rights Campaign, which organized the conference, congratulated Page on the front page of its website for "her brave decision to live openly and authentically."

It depends on the demographic. Some are, some are not. Given that both parents and teachers of young children tend to be relatively young themselves, I'll agree that there is an increasing trend that they are being taught to accept homosexuals.

I would argue that we'll see children in coming decades being taught to not think much of them one way or the other, because society is shifting and it won't be as got an issue going forward.

To address the question, "Why do these people have to get in my face and announce that they're gay? I don't care, and there's been enough of them that it's commonplace that a celebrity be gay."

I've been thinking about it, and I think it has a lot to do with the being a public icon. If we use the estimate that 5-10% of the population is gay, it's still a smallish fraction of people relatively speaking. If you meet somebody on the street and they don't exhibit stereotypical gay characteristics, it's not your first inclination to assume they're gay. The same can apply to Celebrity X. The fact that pop culture is so deeply imbedded into American society means that like it or not, people DO care about gayness. It's an interesting fact to many people, and to others it becomes a point of moral contention. Thus, it becomes news.

The pop culture thing has a lot to do with it, also the degree of saturation. If a Broadway actor came out of the closet publicly, I doubt it would get any media attention outside of the various outlets people turn to for stage show news, and even then people would say, "Uh, no shit." It's just not worth reporting, not enough of the population knows who those people are, and the saturation of familiarity with gayness within the community or particular culture is so high that it's NOT news, and therefore people who are gay in Broadway just don't make it known.

I don't know when it will stop being reported that Hollywood stars are gay. Probably when we stop giving so much of a shit about them. And I don't see that happening any time soon.

About 3% of the population identifies with being gay. Not 5-10%.

I've been trying to come up with my 'ideal' for a sexuality role model, and it hit me that I really dig how Jim Parsons carries himself.
He makes no secret of his homosexuality, he's thanked his partner profusely and eloquently in each of his Emmy wins, but he doesn't hold press conferences or pontificate on sexual politics to any and everyone who will listen.
