Gehrig Dieter led South Bend Washington to the 4A State football finals three weeks ago. He set the Indiana and national records this season for receiving yards in a single game, but it wasn't until last week that he received his first college offer from a BCS school.

It came from Charlie Weis and Kansas. The first recruit the former Irish coach visited was Dieter, Wednesday afternoon at Washington High School.

"He just said that I wouldn't be the first person if I wasn't the most important," Dieter explained Wednesday.

Dieter said he appreciates how blunt Weis is and how he tells you how it is. The Washington star wide receiver will visit KU this weekend.

"It was definitely one of those things where you have to see how you fit in with his offense--which I think I do," Dieter explains. "I'm excited for the visit just to meet all the players and coaches."

Dieter says, after the visit--he'll decide between the Jayhawks and SMU.

"SMU is one of those great schools--up and coming program moving to the big east--really doing big things," he explains. "Kansas is one of those programs that is getting taken over by Coach Weis and I think will be able to do a lot of good things so really between those two schools I'll have a great choice."

Dieter says he plans to tell the coaches next week of his decision, but will wait to make his public announcement until January 3rd when he takes part in the inaugural Semper Fidelis All American Bowl game in Phoenix. He graduates this month from Washington and will enroll at whatever school he chooses in January.

And what would SMU or Kansas being getting? Well.. A player who makes big plays. Right now, he's one of 16 finalists for the National Play of the Year. You can vote at maxpreps.com.

Dieter's play is from the Michigan City game where he broke several tackles for an 80 yard score. At one point, he fools a defender so badly that the defender tackles the ref instead of Dieter.

"it's definitely exciting to be a part of a national Play of the Year," Dieter admits. "Anything like that is pretty exciting. I went up and caught the ball and I don't really know how to explain it after that but just broke a lot of tackles and scored a big touchdown for the team."

The story from the Chicago Tribune made it sound like someone was waiting by the phone for a call while Zenger was talking things through with Weis. I could see that Malzahn was being given serious consideration, but when the opportunity to land Weis became a possibility, Zenger went to go to talk with Charlie.

I hope Malzahn succeeds at ASU.

This is about unreal. The possibility of Dayne Crist for one year while Heap is sitting out a year, followed by two years with Heap? A pipedream, perhaps, but hey, they're coming in for visits, and that wasn't happening prior to Weis.

I don't know much about Arkansas State, but they are 10-2 with losses at Illinois and Va Tech. If they have a lot of players coming back, it could be a big opportunity for him to win 10+ games.

Probably is. He will be facing lesser competition and will likely not get blown out by Oklahoma and Texas.
