Movies

Yeah, so I saw a lot of movies this weekend.

Elizabeth: The Golden Age - Mediocre, at best. Slow and dragged on. Shorten it to 2 hours and it's golden. It's not, so it fails.

Michael Clayton - Amazing. Everything about it is awesome. However, it's VERY complex and mind bending. You have to think, so be prepared. I still feel like I'm missing key details of exactly what happened. Gotta see it again.

Across the Universe - Perfect is one word that comes to mind. It just works. And, contrary to many people I bet, the movie is best viewed sober. Trust me.

Speaking of Joaquin Phoenix...and well ed norton on hulk

http://www.eonline.com/uberblog/marc...imdb_tv-movies

UPDATE: Edward Norton just released a statement on Facebook.

"I am so appreciative of the outpouring of support from fans of the Hulk and The Avengers that I feel it would be rude not to respond," his statement reads in part.

"So here goes: It seems it won't work out for me to continue playing Bruce Banner for Marvel in The Avengers. I sincerely hoped it could happen and be great for everyone, but it hasn't turned out as well as we hoped. I know this is disappointing to many people and that makes me sad. But I am very sincerely grateful to Marvel for extending the offer and even more so for giving me the chance to be a part of the Hulk's long and excellent history."

________

Imagine if Edward Norton really could rage like the Hulk. Let's just say Marvel Studios would have plenty to fear.

The actor's agent is fighting back after this weekend's announcement that his client will not be reprising his role as the green-skinned musclehead for Joss Whedon's upcoming superhero flick, The Avengers.

And, of course, the guessing game of who will land the role has already begun.

Marvel President of Production Kevin Feige said in a statement yesterday that the reason Norton wasn't cast is not because of financial reasons, "but instead rooted in the need for an actor who embodies the creativity and collaborative spirit of our other talented cast members. The Avengers demands players who thrive working as part of an ensemble."

Blasting Feige's statement as "unprofessional, disingenuous and clearly defamatory," Norton's agent Brian Swardstrom said the Oscar-nominee "was enthusiastic at the prospect of being a part of the ensemble.

"Marvel subsequently made him a financial offer to be in the film and both sides started negotiating in good faith," he continued. "This past Wednesday, after several weeks of civil, uncontentious discussions, but before we had come to terms on a deal, a representative from Marvel called to say they had decided to go in another direction with the part."

Norton's team assumed it was a "financial decision," Swardstrom said, "but, whatever the case, it is completely their prerogative, and we accepted their decision with no hard feelings."

Feige apparently called Swardstrom two months ago to say Marvel wanted Norton as Bruce Banner/The Hulk, even going so far as to say it was "his fantasy to bring Edward on stage with the rest of the cast at ComiCon and make it the event of the convention," according to Swardstrom's statement.

No word yet from Marvel, but if they're still looking to make a splash with a Hulk announcement at ComiCon, they better act fast. The geekapalooza festival kicks off in San Diego, California on July 22.

Could Joaquin Phoenix be the one? Movie website Chud is reporting that the wacky actor has already been offered the part.

Reps for Marvel and Phoenix did not immediately comment.

The iconic Western The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance is a thoroughly entertaining tale of law and order, standing up to the bad guy, politics and a love triangle in the territories. John Wayne's presence is astonishing, his delivery so crisp and firm in this it became the standard for impressionists. James Stewart is his usual self, the little virtuous champion. Several critics voted for the film as a Sight & Sound Top 10 of all-time, but it's a little too caricaturistic for that kind of acclaim. Still a must-see.

I have tried a few of those old westerns (pre-Leone) including High Noon and just can't get into them at all.

I'll quote Family Guy (speaking about River Phoenix's death):

"Unfortunately, about a week ago, he took an overdose of designer drugs at the Viper Room. He died on the curb outside. And now we're left with a hare-lipped reminder of what might have been."
Well, I guess we'll see because it looks like it's now been picked up with a release date of September.

Joaquin Phoenix's hip-hop movie on the way
Questions remain about whether actor's music career was just a stunt

by Gregory Ellwood
updated 7/14/2010 3:47:35 PM ET

Oscar nominee Joaquin Phoenix has made quite the spectacle of himself the past two years or so. Surprising many, the star of "Gladiator" and "Walk the Line" claimed he had "retired" from acting in 2008, and was intent on becoming a hip-hop artist.

It was unclear whether this was some sort of charade or a true artistic change of heart because Phoenix has always seemed a little off kilter to many who have worked with him. Still, in the months that followed, he turned down numerous lucrative movie roles in order to work on his music, growing out a long beard and wearing dark sunglasses at all hours.

Questions about the legitimacy of Phoenix's supposed plans first came to light after a bizarre appearance on "The Late Show with David Letterman" in 2009. Phoenix's longtime friend Casey Affleck, was on hand to record the moment — leading to scuttlebutt that the actor's behavior was all for a documentary or mockumentary project.

Considering that Phoenix is now actively looking to return to acting, it appears the last 24 months were a long experiment in the former. Audiences will get to see what was really going on when Affleck's new film, "I'm Not Here," debuts in theaters on Sept. 10.

Magnolia Films announced Wednesday that they had acquired worldwide rights to the film. In a statement, the film was described as "sometimes funny, sometimes shocking, and always riveting ... a portrait of an artist at a crossroads."

While Magnolia is a legitimate independent studio, it's also clear "I'm Not Here" may not be up to par if larger companies passed on what could be a relatively inexpensive, out of the box hit. It's also curious that Affleck and Phoenix, who have many friends and associates in the independent film world, could not get the documentary into any significant film festivals over the past year. The Sept. 10 date insinuates, at least at this point, it certainly won't be at the Venice, Toronto or Telluride festivals.

Phoenix has not committed to an new upcoming projects, but reportedly considered replacing Edward Norton as the Hulk in "The Avengers."

I watched High Noon for the first time a few years ago and thought it was very overrated. Perhaps I was just expecting too much.

I just (finally) saw Man On Wire last night. It's touching. It's suspensful. It's original. It's fantastic. One of the best movies I've seen in years. Just fantastic storytelling.

For those who don't know, it's a documentary about the guy who walked across the WTC towers in the 1970s.

Fun fact, Midnight Cowboy was the only X rated movie to win best picture. Question came up at trivia last night. I've seen it and it didn't strike me as particularly obscene.

Also, and no cheating..... which Redford/Newman movie won 7 Oscars and which 4?

My first guess would be The Sting (7) and Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (4)

It's strange too, right before I read your question I was watching a video where they photoshopped Lebron's head on Hulk Hogan and at the end of the video they play, "Raindrops keep falling on my head."

It would get an R today.

However back then, the MPAA never trademarked the X so the adult movie industry started using it shortly after Midnight Cowboy. There was no real replacement until NC-17, most movies would just release unrated if they couldn't get the R, or cut until they got it. Now, even with a trademarked NC-17, the connotation of adult movies is hard to shake so most distributors won't release a movie unless it is cut to get an R.
