Five Chiefs represent AFC in Honolulu

The 2012 NFL campaign just got extended for five members of the Kansas City Chiefs. The National Football League announced on Wednesday that safety Eric Berry, running back Jamaal Charles, punter Dustin Colquitt and linebackers Tamba Hali and Derrick Johnson have been selected to participate in the 2013 AFC-NFC Pro Bowl.

The NFL’s All-Star game will be played at Aloha Stadium in Honolulu, Hawaii on Sunday, Jan. 27, 2013. For Berry, Charles, Hali and Johnson, it will mark the second time each has officially been selected to the Pro Bowl. Meanwhile, it is the first time in Colquitt’s career that he has earned such accolades.

Eric Berry (6-0, 211) has been designated a Pro Bowl starter. This season he has started all 15 contests for the club recording 80 tackles (68 solo), 9.0 tackles for loss, one interception and 10 passes defensed. His career numbers include 206 tackles (150 solo), 2.0 sacks (-11.0 yards), five interceptions for 102 yards with one touchdown return, 23 passes defensed and one forced fumble.

Berry’s initial trip to the Pro Bowl was in 2010 after his rookie season. He became the first Chiefs rookie to earn a Pro Bowl berth since LB Derrick Thomas following the 1989 season. He was the first Chiefs safety to make the NFL’s All-Star game since S Jerome Woods following the 2003 season. The Fairburn, Ga., native originally joined the Chiefs as Kansas City’s first pick (fifth overall) in the 2010 NFL Draft.

Jamaal Charles (5-11, 199) has played in all 15 games (14 starts) in 2012, recording 1,456 yards on 271 carries (5.4 avg.) with five rushing touchdowns. He has caught 34 passes for 222 yards (6.5 avg.) with one receiving touchdown. Charles currently leads the AFC in rushing yards (1,456) and yards from scrimmage (1,678). He has recorded two 200-plus yard rushing performances this season, including a 233-yard game at New Orleans (9/23) and a 226-yard effort vs. Indianapolis (12/23). He now owns the top three highest single-game rushing totals in franchise history. This season Charles is averaging 97.1 rushing yards per game and has 37 carries of 10 yards, including three touchdowns more than 80 yards. Against New Orleans (9/23) he broke a franchise record with a 91-yard touchdown run and added TD runs of 80 and 86 at Cleveland (12/9) and vs. Indianapolis (12/23), respectively.

Charles’ career numbers include 770 carries for 4,483 yards with 17 touchdowns. He owns 151 receptions for 1,268 yards with seven touchdown grabs. His 5.82 yards per carry average is the highest average in NFL history, topping Pro Football Hall of Fame RB Jim Brown who averaged 5.22 yards per carry over his career. Charles has eclipsed the 1,000-yard rushing mark in three of his five NFL seasons with the Chiefs. The Port Arthur, Texas, native originally joined the Chiefs as a third-round pick (73rd overall) in the 2008 NFL Draft.

Dustin Colquitt (6-3, 210) set a single-season franchise record with 42 punts inside the 20-yard line heading into Week 17 and is now tied for second place in NFL history for most punts inside the 20-yard line in a single season behind Arizona P Dave Zastudil’s 2012 mark of 44. He has punted 75 times for 3,514 yards, marking the seventh-consecutive time in his eight-year career that he has punted for more than 3,000 yards in a single season. He has a gross average of 46.85 yards per kick, the highest gross average of his career, and carries a 40.25 net average, trailing only his single-season career-best 40.78 net average in 2009. To go along with his 42 punts inside the 20 he has seven touchbacks and has a season-long punt of 71 yards.

The Knoxville, Tenn., native has played in 125 games in his eight-year career with Kansas City. He ranks second in team history with 649 punts for 29,008 punting yards, trailing P Jerrel Wilson’s team record of 1,018 punts and 44,218 punting yards. For his career, he has amassed franchise bests with both a 44.70 gross average and a 39.06 net average. He has landed 247 career punts inside the 20-yard line, has recorded 55 touchbacks and has a career-long punt of 81 yards. The University of Tennessee product originally joined the Chiefs as the club’s third-round draft pick (99th overall) in the 2005 NFL Draft.

Tamba Hali (6-3, 275) has been designated a Pro Bowl starter. He has recorded 9.0 sacks (-57.0 yards) to go with 49 tackles (41 solo), 14 QB pressures, two passes defensed and one forced fumble in 14 games in 2012. Hali has recorded two multi-sack games in 2012, bringing his career total to 14 contests with multiple sacks. He is seeking one more sack in Week 17 to become only the third player in franchise history to record double-digit sack totals in three consecutive seasons, joining LB Derrick Thomas (1990-92) and DE Neil Smith (four from 1992-95).

A native of Gbarnga, Liberia, who grew up in Teaneck, N.J., Hali has started all 109 games he has played in during his seven-year NFL career with Kansas City. He has amassed 62.5 career sacks (-395.0 yards), good enough to rank fourth in team history. In that time, he has accumulated 426 tackles (324 solo), 104 QB pressures, 24 forced fumbles, four fumble recoveries, 11 passes defensed and one interception. His 24 forced fumbles place him third in franchise history behind Thomas and Smith. The Penn State product originally joined the Chiefs as the team’s first-round draft pick (20th overall) in the 2006 NFL Draft.

Derrick Johnson (6-3, 242) leads the team in tackles for the third straight season with 119 tackles (104 solo) heading into the final week of the season, one year after setting the franchise’s single-season tackle record with 179 tackles (126 solo) and earning his first trip to the Pro Bowl. He has registered double-digit tackle totals in four games this season. Johnson also owns 12.0 tackles for loss, 2.0 sacks (-10.0 yards), five pressures, three forced fumbles and two passes defensed.

The Waco, Texas, native has played in 121 games (108 starts) during his eight-year career with Kansas City. He ranks fifth in team history with 868 tackles (675 solo), one of just six players in team history to reach the 800-tackle plateau. Johnson has tallied 50.0 tackles for loss, 18.0 sacks (-121.0 yards), nine interceptions returned for 233 yards, including three returned for touchdowns, 19 forced fumbles to rank fourth in team history, five fumble recoveries, 49 passes defensed, 42 QB pressures and 18 career special teams stops. Johnson was originally selected by Kansas City in the first round (15th overall) of the 2005 NFL Draft.

Thats just fellow players feeling bad for the team.

Charles and DJ should've been it, you can throw Colquitt in, but its pretty F'N sad when the punter is one of the hero's.

To be fair. Hasn't Berry graded out as one of the top safeties in the NFL the 2nd half of the year?

Terrible 1st half, but still a weak AFC safety crop.

Underachieving Chiefs put five on Pro Bowl roster
Posted by Mike Florio on December 26, 2012, 7:39 PM EST

The Kansas City Chiefs have won only two games this year. And they have nevertheless placed five players on the AFC Pro Bowl roster.

Making the roster were running back Jamaal Charles, linebacker Tamba Hali, linebacker Derrick Johnson, safety Eric Berry, and punter Dustin Colquitt.

Two of the five — Charles and Berry — returned in 2012 from torn ACLs, which makes their accomplishments even more impressive. Both have played all 15 games to date in 2012.

It’s a solid nucleus for a team that arguably is only a good quarterback away from becoming competitive. Of course, the same thing could be said for pretty much every struggling team that currently doesn’t have a good quarterback.
