DayZ

With the DayZ standalone playable alpha release looming, I thought I would check out the mod version of the game. http://dayzdev.tumblr.com/

If you dont know, DayZ is an open world survival zombie game modification based off of the military sim ArmA 2 games. www.dayzmod.com

Basically its hardcore mode survival against zombies and even more dangerous, other players.

I have been watching vids for months and took advantage of a steam sale today to pick up ArmA 2.

Anyone playing DayZ right now? Servers? Thoughts? I have a teamspeak we can use!

Played a little experimental last night, found one of the new cities, it kind of sprawls with lots of greenspace. Also KOed a dude and took his SKS but succumbed to bleeding a few minutes later

Not even close.

Half of the game is already rewritten, and they are going to rewrite the renderer among other things.

What will end up happening is that it will be so different from the arma engine they are going to give it a new name. However, lots of those rewritten parts of the engine are already in standalone, all of the base game textures, code and portions of the engine that are sufficient etc etc etc are not changing.

People are freaking out because they dont know the context. The renderer is what is going to allow the game to play up to expectations using dx11 and even 12.

They are not even close to starting over on anything, its the same plan its always been, except certain parts of the engine just where not made to handle what they want to do, so its being re-written. Changes will be subtle, meaningful, and overall make a better game. Games like this have a 5 year development cycle behind closed doors, and this kind of shit happens ALL the time. You just don't have 2 million+ pre-sold customers bickering and bitching about every single thing that happens, 95% of which don't have a clue about the process.

Then he shouldn't say....

Rocket: It is a complete rip out of everything, but we’re definitely leveraging existing tech. So if you look at Bohemia as a studio they actually acquired a great number of other studios, so really were kind of looking around and taking up tech that is available there and mixing it into the engine, rewriting new stuff from scratch that we want to do as well.

When I hear complete rip of everything, that translates to everything lol

That doesn't say the are restarting. The "rip out" has been in progress for a long time already.

The only thing that happened is they decided to give the engine they've been working on a new name.

Also, all the experimental shi is going to stable next week, including fixed rubber banding. Big changes for stable, and that means more varried progress in experimental.

Everything you said is fine, but only of big developers. Indie or small devs can crush a game to never coming out completed. Now take what you said and add the fact that Sony is making their own game and other big devs might jump at the chance to beat them to the completed market.

Upgrading engines is not as simple as it sounds for small groups. I wish them well, but there is a reason for concern. I was part of a Vivendi group were they gave us access to their game to upgrade engine. Not easy.
