More OTA junk-- Charles as receiver and Terrance Copper's next victim

For those who want it, I thought a few of these kcchiefs.com reports were kind of interesting. It's tough to navigate through the homer garbage on the site or even take away meaning from the stuff that actually happens, but these were two things that stood out to me.

The coaches (and Derrick Johnson, apparently) are impressed with Jamaal Charles' ability to catch the ball. He made a nice one-handed catch in the May 30 practice:

Chiefs offensive coordinator Doug Pederson addressed the media after practice and spoke to Jamaal's versatility out of the backfield.

“I think you can use him more in the passing game," Pederson said.

"You’ve seen him sprint out of the single receiver and he’ll come out of the backfield. He’s a guy that needs to move around and you can put in different positions, motion out of the back, shift him from the backfield. He catches the ball so well that, you have to take advantage of that offensively.”

Chiefs LB Derrick Johnson can personally testify about Jamaal's pass-catching ability.

"That was an amazing catch." Johnson said of Charles' one-handed grab.

"Jamaal never surprises me with what he does; he’s a guy that’s probably our best player on the team. We expect him to make those plays, but we’re still wowed when he makes them."

I think Charles is talented enough of an athlete to pick up anything, really. It might not be in 2013, but I imagine it won't be long before he really grasps what Andy Reid wants him to do. Pretty fun to think about Charles becoming even MORE of a potent weapon than he already is.

The other thing is the search for the next Jeremy Horne/Verran Tucker/Ashley Lelie/JJ Moses camp fodder scrub at WR who will inevitably lose a roster spot to Terrance Copper. Looks like vaginas are going to be sore about two names this training camp: Junior Hemingway and Tyler Shoemaker.

The guy responsible for spearheading drives up and down the field in 2013 is Chiefs QB Alex Smith, who has been utilizing several different receivers during OTAs, including Chiefs WR Junior Hemingway.

“I think he’s doing a great job," Smith said of Hemingway. "He’s gotten a lot of work and is really making the most of it. He’s a guy we’re really moving around a lot. He’s gotten good work.”

Another Chiefs wide receiver, Tyler Shoemaker, who signed with the team in January, has been a playmaker this offseason, catching most everything thrown his way.

"It’s been a great learning process," Shoemaker said.

"I think every day we go out there as a receiver group and try and get better and pick little things to work on each day and just try to take all the coaching that we can to get better. Whether it be one specific thing or overall, take a coaching point that we’ve heard throughout the install or the day before at practice and really try and focus on that."

Once the team wraps up offseason workouts this week, Shoemaker doesn't plan on shutting things down.

"I think it’s just continuing with preparation," Shoemaker said of his plans before training camp.

"We’re going to be able to study some more on our own and I think just physically preparing, make sure you’re staying in shape, getting ready for fall camp and all that and mentally staying sharp and remembering the plays and going over that stuff."

Reid's WR report also talked about Devon Wylie favorably, even though it featured a remark from Dave Toub that basically says he's screwed:

"Devon is a combo guy; he does both," Toub said. "He needs to get a little bit more polished, as far as a catcher on punts. He’s doing a real good job on kickoff returns; he’s got a bright future, he’s a young player. He’s in the mix."

No idea if the Chiefs would consider keeping 6 WRs. If they don't, then the best chance these camp fodder guys have would be for Baldwin to fail out and get cut. I don't think much else is going to save them from Copper's sure-fire spot on the 53 man roster next season.

Copper will be a starter this year. Every year for the past seven years or so he's moved up one spot in the depth chart. This is going to be his year.

Charles should have 2000-2200 yards from scrimmage this year. Will be very fun to watch him this year.

there really is no excuse as to why between catches and carries that Charles shouldn't be around 30 touches a game. Any less than that, and the play calling is failing horribly.....

I believe in using your weapons, but even Reid is not going to put every game on Charles. He's a running back, and RB's aren't getting 30 touches a game.

Alex Smith already has 40 hotel rooms booked for NYC in early February.

30 is too much. 25 should be the aiming point.

About 20-22 carries per game and 4-6 catches.
