Even after his last two seasons, would you still trade Alex Smith for Phillip Rivers?

A buddy of mine and I at work were discussing this today. He says no way but I'd do it in a heartbeat. I cant stand the douche and he has been pretty bad lately but I still think Rivers has more potential to get us a playoff win than Alexis. And yes, Im that beat down as a Chiefs fan...all I want is one playoff win.

If they were the same age, or if this was a few years ago, Phillip Rivers would be my choice. Right now though, I'd probably go with Alex Smith.

we might be quicker to ask exactly which QBS CLAY WOULDNT trade for Alex smith. that would save a lot of time.

If he were available in free agency, I'd be interested. But as a trade? No.

If he bombs out this season, it'll be his last in San Diego, anyway.
If Phillip had a solid team around him do you think he would have been so reckless with the football? This is a very strange QB. His stock is dropping, but I am not convinced he is done. I think he has more upside and explosiveness to his game than Alex. Obviously he is a risk for real bad games though.

Unless Alex Smith gets more aggressive under Andy, I don't think we are getting anywhere deep with him. For that reason, I would take my chances with lightening in a bottle with Rivers and a good QB coach around him. On top of that, a solid running game and defense that should be improved. I think Phillip just needs to be reigned in a little and have a good QB coach adjust him.

by no means am I saying Rivers is an elite, top 5 quarterback, that shipped has sailed, but if you pick alex smith over Pip your football intellect is amateur at best.

I think both have question marks. Personally, having watched Rivers and Smith several times a year for the past few years, I give the edge to Smith. Smith is no where near as reckless or careless with the football as Rivers and at his age, I'm not sure you can coach or "uncoach" him to make mistakes in which he's made a recent habit of repeating.

I get that people are in love with his arm strength but arm strength alone doesn't win championships.

Otherwise, Rivers would have a ring by now.

Rivers will have a better year than Smith this season.
Thoughts on Vincent Brown? I watched him play last year and was impressed. What are his predictions this year?

Fair. Rivers used to be high up on my list but the past several years have certainly dropped him a lot. As you mentioned, at his age changing his ways might not be realistic. I think in the end I would take a gamble with Rivers because I don't think Smith will get us over the edge. Phillip is anything but a safe bet though. As the stats have shown, he is the complete opposite.

I also have a hard time judging Rivers because I absolutely despised him for so long that I don't have an objective view on him. Part of me has down played his ability out of hate and part of my has built him up because of all the times he shredded a poor KC secondary. I think that has a lot to do with me not being able to place the guy.

I thought he would have had more success than this by now.

To me; seeing rivers in a chiefs uni would be close to seeing elway or manning in one. No thanks. Who's next, hoping to trade for brees, or Ryan? Oh I know, mark Sanchez and Mecca's Sedrick Ellis for a fifth.....
