That was quite the surprise. One I could see, but not two.

And none of the 100 largest are in Florida. That's my other surprise takeaway.

It's kind of like being out on a really cold day, and you stop into a restaurant for a few minutes to have a delicious cup of hot chocolate. You know that you eventually have to go back out, but it feels so good while you're inside.

Approximately 34 percent of those 100 largest islands have no population. And one of them, Long Island, has more people than the other 99 combined.

Why would you need to approximate a percentage in this situation? Hell, why would you even use a percentage when you're dealing with a set of 100 for that matter? This bothers me.

Be comforted in the fact that only 99 of the islands have populations listed on wikipedia, with the 100th (Duke Island, Alaska) having a question mark and no number in the population column. Therefore, my current data lists approximately 34 percent have no population.

I'm particularly interested in the one person who is listed as a resident of Seguam Island, an 80-square mile island that is way out in the Aleutians. What is this person's story? Is he/she an antisocial Aleut? A lone military person in a remote lookout spot? A castaway that people refuse to rescue but still send a census form to? I really want to know.

However, I also note that the SS Grayback submarine visited the island in 1959. Why would they visit this island? Did they drop off a mutinous crew member? Did they set up a top secret observation post? Did they forget about one red-shirted member of the landing party?

I think this lone resident has something to do with the Grayback.

However, the largest island in the United States (Hawaii's Big Island) is only the world's 76th largest island.

Canada's Baffin Island is the 5th largest in the world.

Get with the program, United States. Sheesh.

Even worse. Antarctica, which has one single national claim, but is shared by multiple countries, has THREE islands larger than our Big Island.
