Jets cut Mark Sanchez

The Mark Sanchez era is over.

Sanchez, the quarterback who went to the Jets with the fifth overall pick in the 2009 NFL draft and has been a polarizing player since, has been released. The Jets officially announced the long-awaited move on Friday afternoon.

At his best, Sanchez showed promise as a player who could develop into a franchise quarterback who would lead the team for years to come. But he had significant flaws as a passer, flaws which were often overlooked in his first two seasons, when the Jets rode a strong defense to the AFC Championship Game.

Later on, when the Jets’ defense didn’t play quite as well, it became more apparent that Sanchez simply didn’t have what it took to lead a team to a winning record. The Jets’ baffling decision to give Sanchez a contract extension in 2012 was followed a year later by the decision to draft Geno Smith in 2013, which sealed Sanchez’s fate.

Now Sanchez becomes an unrestricted free agent and can sign with any team. Someone will surely pick Sanchez up and let him compete for a roster spot, but it’s unlikely that he’ll be a starter in 2014. Sanchez has a lot of work to do to turn his career around, and if he ever does it, it won’t be as a Jet.

are you saying Alex can get back there without a top 5 defense? Because he just proved in the playoffs he cant all by himself. And I like Alex, but he's still a QB that needs a good ****ing defense. There's not many QBs that don't, but he falls in that good QB/needs a defense tier that many others do.
A #1 defense and top running attack can get any QB there. Look at Seattle, San Francisco, Baltimore, etc. The problem with those AFCC-losing Sanchez/Jets teams was that he was the one holding the rest of the team back.

Alex proved he can do more than his share to get it done during the playoffs but like every other NFL team, needs the rest of the team to do their part too.

I guess by top ranked defense you mean one that could hold a team to less than 44 points?

Jeebus, you are a ****ing clown...

Sanchez is a pretty darn nice guy - why do you guys bash him all the time? Isn't there anything to say about simply being a decent person?

just indicating that yeah he sucks and disappointed - but maybe he can find himself with another team. If he sucks though - he just does....

Also - the guy was pretty fair in College - so he's not an all together 'loser' at life.

Focus on dogging out the johnny footballs and Tony Romo's.

Take the last name away from Johnny Football - and square him off at a Beverly Hill's all girl party versus Mark Sanchez and watch who pulls more pussy.

It's not just the Colts. Hypothetically if we advance there, we would need a top ranked defense to stop the Broncos, Patriots and any of those NFC teams.

Something that will be proven to be needed with our 2014 schedule. That makes me a clown, knowing we need a top ranked defense to compete with the NFC West, Patriots, Broncos or any team with a ****ing starting QB that isn't the cupcake 3rd stringers we faced last year that inflated our 10+ million per year defensive players.

naw man - I just appreciate his character - I don't really think he's good - like you - I think he may have some talent - but never really figured out how to commit. Just my observation. Any ideas where he may go? I haven't read the whole thread yet.

He seems to enjoy the big media centers and night life. I would expect him to end up as a backup in California,New York or Miami.

Maybe Hotlanta with the Falcons
