Iowa City CP'ers

Tell me of your city. I'm going to be working up here for the foreseeable future and I'd appreciate any of the usual info. Restaurants, things to do, mechanics, doctors, so on and so forth you'd recommend. I'm 26 and have a fiancee if that gives you any cues on stuff to do.

I know U of Iowa is here and the city isn't that big. I'm guessing most everything centers around the University. I know the weather sucked here today so that's no different than KC. Are the winters even more awful? I'm presuming they are. That's about all I got right now.

Just help a guy out.

Cedar Falls is the shit. Iowa City is too if you are able to ignore the douches, but Cedar Falls...that's good shit right there.

I like going to Iowa City. Most of all we go there for the used book store, The Book Shop on DBQ St. and the food.
The Ped Mall is always interesting.
Be sure to catch the Old Capital Criterium in April. Its fun watching the bike race from the bars.

I like hearing that CP'ers think Cedar Falls is the shit. Been a lifelong resident here, went to College at UNI and just ended up staying.
I like when the College kids are here, but its just as nice when they leave for the summer.
I live just a mile from the downtown area. I would be more then happy to give any CP'er a tour of our fine City and our establishments.

You will get some/few Chiefs games in Iowa City. It's still Bears, Packers even Vikings country more than KC. Des Moines is where you pick up KC coverage. I live in Denver now and compare IC to a smaller version of Boulder, CO.

IC is what it is. A college town with a passion for the Hawks. Downtown IC can be a fun time as is Coralville. North Liberty is also building out quite a bit.

Oyama is good for sushi, still a good time at The Vine and Mondos, and Orchard Green, Joseph's and Linn Street Cafe for fine dining. Jimmy Jacks Rib Shack for decent BBQ.

I used to go there once per month or so. Always had a blast. People didn't seem to have as much of a chip on their shoulder there when compared to the Ped Mall in Iowa City. Not to mention, my baby bros (ages 14 and 16) along with my younger bro closer to my age (28) who actually wrestled for the Panthers wrestled at the Unidome all the time in the bigger tournaments. Place is really neat. I sure as HELL like Cedar Falls much more than I like it's neighbor, Waterloo... It's like Jekyll and Hyde comparing those 2 places.

I actually went to college in what I believe to be a very underrated college town. It was Dubuque, IA. Wrestled for a private school called Loras. You ever had the Dubuque experience? I believe it's just an hour drive from Hwy 20. Anyways, many people don't realize this, but Dubuque has 4 colleges; Loras, Clarke, University of Dubuque and NICC. They call it the "tri-college" town (they evidently don't include NICC). Anyways, every...single....night there is some sort of crazy alcohol special at a different bar. And the drink special bars would for sure, be packed. Example: Monday: $1 pitchers at The Walnut, Tuesday: $6 for 3 pitchers at Fat Tuesdays, Wednesday: Penny pitchers (with $5 cover) at Bricktown, Thursday: $1 bottles at the Doghouse, Friday: $1 you call it at Bricktown ($10 cover), Saturday: $5 cover, unlimited draft beer at the Julien, Sunday: 3 pitchers for $6 at Sublime. Those are crazy deals...nightly.

Oh ok, you were a bit younger. I believe he graduated in 2007. He wrestled varsity for them when his shoulder wasn't all dinged up.

Yeah man, my bro is experiencing that shit right now. He and his wife bought a house off Hwy. 2 (on Sandusky Drive...HAHAHA, Sandusky) and shit..I think it was 170-180k. And then you have me, in the podunk town I grew up in and am attached to, who ended up purchasing an appraised for 90k house on foreclosure for 51k.

I noticed on the Lollapalooza thread, you like the following: Nine Inch Nails, Queens of the Stone Age, Lana Del Ray, Band of Horses, Chance the Rapper, The Postal Service, The National, Kendrick Lamar, Local Natives, Phoenix, Grizzly Bear, Tegan and Sara, Beach House, Alt-J, DIIV.

Dude, I'm tellin' ya. Keep tabs on The Moose Lodge. That place will be right up your alley. Hell, I know for sure that Band of Horses, Grizzly Bear and The National have all played there. Some of the other probably have as well. And if you are in to local/upcoming bands, The Moose Lodge brings in talent from Iowa City, Chicago, Quad Cities, Minneapolis, Cedar Falls, Des Moines, etc.

Yeah, its funny about the Waterloo/Cedar Falls rivalry. Its not even close. Cedar Falls has money, cares about its citizens, is clean..etc etc...
Its no doubt we are snobs about it.

Rico, DBQ is a very cool town. I married a chick from there, (divorced now), so we spent a lot of time with the DBQ experience. I esp like the Busted Lift.
