All-Time Best First Round

Okay, so here's a thing.

Let's try and put together the best possible first round of all time.

For example, if you think Peyton Manning (1998) is the best #1 overall pick of all time, he'd be the first pick. Marshall Faulk (1994) might be your pick for the best #2 of all time, and so on.

(Actually, maybe "all-time" should just be "since the merger" because the draft was a much different animal before the modern era, I think.)

Let's do it! I think Manning/Faulk is debatable, so I'll leave those blank for now, but #3 and #4 seem pretty obvious to me.

Updating as people suggest picks, but all of these slots are still open to debate.

1. Peyton Manning, Indianapolis Colts (1998)
2. Lawrence Taylor, New York Giants (1981)
3. Barry Sanders, Detroit Lions (1989)
4. Derrick Thomas, Kansas City Chiefs (1989)
5. Deion Sanders, Atlanta Falcons (1995)
6. John Riggins, New York Jets (1971)
7. Adrian Peterson, Minnesota Vikings (1997)
8.
9. Brian Urlacher, Chicago Bears (2000)
10.
11.
12. Warren Sapp, Tampa Bay Buccaneers (1995)
13. Tony Gonzalez, Kansas City Chiefs (1997)
14. Jim Kelly, Buffalo Bills (1983)
15.
16. Jerry Rice, San Francisco 49ers (1985)
17. Emmitt Smith, Dallas Cowboys (1991)
18.
19.
20.
21. Randy Moss, Minnesota Vikings (1998)
22.
23.
24. Aaron Rodgers, Green Bay Packers (2005)
25.
26. Ray Lewis, Baltimore Ravens (1996)
27. Dan Marino, Miami Dolphins (1983)
28.
29.
30.
31.
32.

No doubt should fill that #10 spot.

Went through the list of choices at #10. It's between Ron Woodson, Jerome Bettis and Marcus Allen, with a passing nod to Terrell Suggs and Herman Moore, who was a great WR dealing with crappy Lions QBs.

Out of that group, I'd probably take Marcus Allen, though it's not exactly a slam dunk over Woodson. I think he's clearly ahead of Bettis, however, as he was much more of a receiving threat.

Umm....sure? As the guy who saw Manning mount more than a few furious come from behind victories, including one over the Patriots in the 2005 AFCCG when down something like 31-17 in the second half, Manning is plenty clutch for me.

Believe me, I'd take Tom Brady over either of them, but as between Manning and Elway, I'll take Manning. The biggest advantage Elway has over Manning in my book isn't some vague "clutch" thing, it's his running/scrambling ability.

Not even close. Not even remotely close to being close. So far from close that it is, in fact, far.

I gotta stop this, but...

at number 6 (assuming 1970 forward) the contenders are:

Richard Seymour, Torry Holt, Walter Jones, Tim Brown, James Lofton, and John Riggins.

Out of that group, I like Seymour, Jones and Brown over the rest, and think I would take Jones over all of them, as one of the top 3 or so best offensive tackles in NFL history.

I got bored and built a list...some did fall before 1970, but only a year or two.

1 OJ Simpson, Terry Bradshaw, Lee Roy Selmon, Earl Campbell, John Elway, Bruce Smith, Troy Aikman, Orlando Pace, Peyton Manning

2 Lawrence Taylor, Eric Dickerson, Marshall Faulk

3 Anthony Munoz, Barry Sanders, Cortez Kennedy, Larry Fitzgerald

4 Bob Griese, Joe Greene, John Hannah, Walter Payton, Dan Hampton, Derrick Thomas, Jonathan Ogden

5 Deion Sanders, Junior Seau, LaDanian Tomlinson

6 Floyd Little, John Riggins, James Loften, Walter Jones

7 Champ Bailey, Adrian Peterson

8 Larry Csonka, Ronnie Lott, Willie Roaf

9 Brian Urlacher (wins by default)

10 Marcus Allen, Rod Woodson, Jerome Bettis

11 Michael Irvin, Ben Roethlisberger

12 Warren Sapp, Haloti Ngata

13 Fred Dryer, Kellen Winslow, Tony Gonzalez

14 Jim Kelly

15 Alan Page

16 Jerry Rice, Troy Polamalu

17 Gene Upshaw, Emmitt Smith

18 Art Monk

19 Roger Wehrli

20 Jack Youngblood

21 Lynn Swann, Randy Moss

22 Andre Rison (at least his gf burned down his house)

23 Ozzie Newsome

24 Ed Reed

25 Ted Washington, Tim ****ing Tebow (it was close, but I had to go with the guy who actually played)

26 Joe DeLamielleure, Ray Lewis

27 Dan Marino

28 Darrell Green, Derrick Brooks

29 Hakeem Nicks (who else?)

30 Reggie Wayne (who else?)

31 Nnamdi Asamugha (who else?)

32 Logan Mankins

The morel of the story is, take a DT at #12, a WR at #21 and kiss your ass goodbye if you are picking 22 and 25.

Overall your list isn't bad, but Riggins isn't even a top 10 RB all-time. Cant' see taking him over a top 2-3 tackle.

21 Lynn Swann, Randy Moss

Oh my God no. Like I said, overall not bad, but this one is crazy.
