K.C. Chiefs Training Camp Daily Updates

Due to lightning, thunder as well as the fields being flooded, today's afternoon practice was moved into the Robert P. Knowles Physical Education and Recreation Center. The practice was not opened to the public. The rain has ceased and currently in River Falls it is 68 degrees, cloudy, the dew point is at 66 degrees and the wind is coming out of the west-southwest at 3 m.p.h. This is the fifth practice in 15 years that the Chiefs have been forced inside. Wednesday's temperatures are predicted to be 10 degrees lower than today's.

Coach Dick Vermeil said after practice that the Chiefs were trying to make the best out of a bad situation when they had to practice inside due to weather conditions. "We came in here to get done what we could get done," Vermeil said. He continued to say that they lost a practice today, and that preparation for Friday night's game is not as good as he wanted it to be. He also compared tonight's practice to what a typical Wednesday night practice is like during the season. On Wednesday practices, the team practices in shells, while on Thursday practices, they are in pads.

He additionally discussed his approach to camp, and how there are fewer padded practices, such as Sunday night, when the team practices in hats and shells. Vermeil felt that by doing this they could maintain more consistent, higher energized practices. "Practices in the mornings have been very spirited in shells, practices in pads have been very intense in the afternoon. When you have practices in the morning and afternoon in pads, you begin to lose that energy." Vermeil also said that this is a positive approach because players are beginning to get beat up and worn out, and doing pads only once a day is helping the players out physically.

Special Teams:

Special teams worked on punt return formations whileSpecial Teams Coach Frank, Gansz, Jr. offered tips on how to perfect punt returns. Willie Pile, Boomer Grigsby, Dee Brown, Scott Fujita, Gary Stills, Keyaron Fox, Shaunard Harts, Kris Griffin, Benny Sapp, Dante Hall and William Bartee were all apart of the first unit in punt returns.

Tight end Tony Gonzalez was back to practice today indoors. Gonzalez was seen doing some extra footwork drills during practice and afterwards. In a series of 11-on-11s, Gonzalez caught a very deep pass from quarterback Todd Collins .

Running back Priest Holmes was present for today's practice as well. In a session of 11-on-11s Holmes took a hand off from quarterback Trent Green for a great run up the middle.

Coach Vermeil was relieved to see Holmes and Gonzalez back practicing. "All coaches have security blankets, and Tony and Priest are two of mine," says Coach Vermeil .

The offensive line worked on footwork drills today for about the first 15-minutes of practice. Offensive Line Coach Mike Solari had many tips for his players, "Nice and low stance, elbows nice and tight," among them.

Wide receiver John Booth had a good practice indoors this afternoon. In a series of 11-on-11s, Booth had a great catch from quarterback James Kilian. Booth caught the ball and cornerback Patrick Surtain hit the ball from his hands, but Booth recovered the ball smoothly for a yardage gain. Also, in 7-on-7s, Booth had a leaping catch on the sidelines from quarterback Damon Huard.

In 7-on-7s wide receiver Richard Smith had a nice catch from quarterback James Kilian. Smith juggled the ball in his hands, but ended up recovering the ball to complete the play.

Wide receiver Jeris McIntyre stayed after practice to work on footwork drills.

Running back Samkon Gado stayed after and ran sprints, but did not practice.

Defense

This afternoon's indoor practice limited the defense because there was no hitting, and it was more focused on formations.

During 11-on-11 drills safety Sammy Knight showed off with a few dazzling plays. One of the first plays of the night was an interception he caught off of quarterback Damon Huard. The intended receiver was tight end Mike Kallfelz. Knight also put pressure on wide receiver Richard Smith, which caused Smith to drop the ball that was thrown by quarterback Todd Collins. Smith also lost another catch due to the defense minutes later. Safety Greg Wesley ran behind Smith and knocked the ball out of his hands, making it incomplete.

During 7-on-7 drills, a few members on defense made up for the dull practice by getting in a few interceptions. Linebacker Kendrell Bell picked off a pass by quarterback Huard. Safety Greg Wesley made a very close interception, when he had his hands on a pass thrown by Huard, and intended for Craphonso Thorpe. Linebacker Keyaron Fox also made an interception off of quarterback James Kilian.

During 11-on-11 drills Fox made another interception, also off of quarterback James Kilian.

Most of this stuff doesn't matter since they were practicing inside. It is nice that both Gonzo and Priest were back tonight.
