I agree, he should get a new contract. The Iggles are a good team and I'm firmly in favor of them removing themselves as a threat to win the Super Bowl, so whatever Owens can do to further that cause, I support...

(If the Iggles go down hard, the NFC might not win a Super Bowl for the rest of this decade...)

New T.O. agent meeting with Banner today

Eagles president Joe Banner will meet today with Drew Rosenhaus, new agent for wide receiver Terrell Owens, and - according to Rosenhaus - offensive tackle Tra Thomas, though Thomas' listed agent, Peter Schaffer, said last night that was news to him.

Beyond the fact of the scheduled meeting, very little is clear, but there is an unmistakable hint of trouble brewing between the Eagles and the superstar widely credited with helping them finally return to the Super Bowl this past season.

Banner said last night he isn't sure what to think about Owens' sudden ditching of agent David Joseph in favor of Rosenhaus, who has been acquiring high-profile clients left and right lately, and now represents about 90 NFL players, believed to be the largest contingent in the league. A report on ESPN.com said the change might have to do with Owens wanting to rework the 7-year contract, worth up to $49 million, he signed after coming to the Eagles a year ago from San Francisco.
Rosenhaus wouldn't quite say that last night when contacted by the Daily News.

"I'm not going to get into the specifics at this time," said Rosenhaus, who is believed to have traveled to Philadelphia yesterday. "Whenever I begin representing a player, I always like to sit down with a team and discuss my client's contractual situation."

Asked what Owens didn't like about the deal, which is said to pay him about $13 million over the first 2 years and $8 million in the third year, Rosenhaus said, "That's really between me and the team."

Rosenhaus said he also expected to discuss Thomas, whom he noted is "coming off a Pro Bowl season." Thomas is scheduled to make $2.75 million this season and is signed through 2008. Schaffer, Thomas' agent since the Eagles drafted him in the first round out of Florida State in 1998, said last night he was under the impression he was still representing Thomas. He asked a reporter to call back after Schaffer had a chance to call Thomas. Schaffer did not respond to the return call. Thomas could not be reached for comment.

Neither Owens nor Joseph could be reached for comment last night. Joseph, a low-profile agent based in Greensboro, N.C., has represented Owens since he was a third-round 49ers rookie out of Tennessee-Chattanooga, in 1996. Owens staunchly defended Joseph last year when the 49ers and the NFL contended Joseph had missed a notification deadline and nullified Owens' impending free agency, allowing the 49ers to trade him to Baltimore. The players association was able to argue in arbitration that the deadline was improperly applied to Owens, and the league brokered the trade that brought Owens here last March 16.
Owens wrote several times of his deep feelings for Joseph in his book, "Catch This! Going Deep with the NFL's Sharpest Weapon," released last year. On the missed-deadline controversy, Owens wrote: "We were family now, David and I. He'd had my back for years, through Dallas and Sharpie and everything else, and I had his now. If you don't do this when it really counts, then you don't know what family means. Or faith. Or love. David was in the meat grinder, and I needed to be there for him until this got resolved."

In the acknowledgements at the front of the book, Owens gave special thanks to Joseph and wrote that "our relationship is so much more than client-agent."

Eagles officials who dealt with Joseph were impressed by the depth of his concern for Owens and his strong, passionate involvement in T.O.'s various ventures.

When it comes to Owens, the Eagles know they have to tread carefully, as they did through assorted controversies last season. It helped that Owens was spectacular, catching 77 passes for 1,200 yards and 14 touchdowns before suffering a severe ankle injury and broken fibula in the 14th game of the season. He returned for the Super Bowl, 49 days after undergoing surgery, and caught nine passes for 122 yards.

But the team is extremely unlikely to rework a high-profile contract after just one season; the precedent set could be a disaster for a franchise that prides itself on fiscal prudence. It's hard to recall any instance of a team doing such a thing.

"I don't really know anything yet," said Banner, who said in their one phone conversation this week, Rosenhaus only told him he was representing Owens, and didn't mention the contract. Banner said he hadn't heard anything about Rosenhaus representing Thomas.

The Eagles and Rosenhaus have an up-and-down history. The team contends that if Rosenhaus client Hugh Douglas had taken its offer 2 years ago, Douglas would have come out better in the long run than he did in taking a seemingly better deal from Jacksonville, getting cut after 1 year of a 5-year, $27 million contract, then signing two 1-year contracts with the Eagles for the veteran minimum. But the Eagles had nothing but verbal kisses for Rosenhaus last year when he steered Jevon Kearse their way at the start of free agency, Kearse signing an 8-year contract that could be worth as much as $66 million.

Rosenhaus, based in Miami Beach, apparently has nearly doubled his client base in the past year, and just recently has added Edgerrin James, Chad Johnson, Plaxico Burress and Javon Walker to his stable.
There haven't been a lot of wide-receiver deals done since Owens' contract that would pay more than T.O. is scheduled to receive. One possible such benchmark is the reported 7-year, $67 million extension Marvin Harrison signed with the Colts in December. But speculation holds that Harrison, at 32 a year older than Owens, might not see all that money. His signing bonus was reported at $6 million, well below the $10 million the Eagles gave T.O.
