ChiefsCountry's Final 2012 Chiefs Mock

1. Dont'a Hightower, LB, Alabama

Sort of a shocker pick, but this is who I think the Chiefs will go after. Even though they tendered Belcher a 2nd rounder, basically that was to keep other teams away IMO. Hightower was the heart and soul of the Alabama defense. The Chiefs defense will get an upgrade to the linebacking core and with Belcher as a backup gives us a deep linebacking core.

2. Harrison Smith, S, Notre Dame

Gives the Chiefs another starter in the secondary. Can play either strong or free safety. Could give the Chiefs the freedom to put Eric Berry at free safety or vice versa. Chiefs improve depth on the team as well allowing Kendrick Lewis to be the 3rd safety.

3. Ben Jones, C, Georgia

Chiefs nab a potential starter in the 3rd for the center position. Allows Hudson to stay at guard, which would put Lilja as a backup, improving depth on the line.

4. AJ Jenkins, WR, Illinois

Chiefs nab a solid WR out of the Big Ten. Basically we pick up WR#4 and depth with this selection. I like Jenkins alot. Solid football player in the 4th round.

5. Andrew Datko, OT, Florida State

Chiefs have zero depth at OT behind Albert and Winston. They have Mims and that is it. Datko can play both right and left tackle. He does have some injury issues but we are looking at depth not a starter, so its not as critical.

6. Adam Gettis, G/C, Iowa

Another depth draft pick. Gettis fits our zone blocking scheme perfectly. He can play either guard or center.

7. Brandon Bolden, RB, Mississippi

A big back who can help spell Charles and Hillis.

7. James Hanna, TE, Oklahoma

Atheltic tight end who could be a sleeper pick IMO. Gets rid of the Jake O'Connell stink as well.

As much as I'd like to have another wr, I don't really think we take one unless someone falls into our laps.

Swap Jones with Chapman, and Molk with the 4 round pick.

A lot of those players have been pet picks of mine all season. Datko in the midrounds, Gettis late, Bolden in the 7th.

Not a big fan of Harrison Smith or Ben Jones. I'd probably upgrade those with the best passrusher who fell to Round 2, and Chapman in the 3rd.

I'm not crazy about Hightower, either, but just because I'd rather us take some of the more elite athletes at that pick. I like Hightower just fine on his own.

Say a Nic Perry in the second?

I also like the safety from Miami. Molk as a better C prospect for what we want.

Maybe.

Who's the passrushing talent in the early draft?

Ingram
Mercilus
Upshaw
McClellin
Perry
Andre Branch
Chandler Jones

There's no way seven of these guys all go before the 44th pick.

I'd take any of them over Smith in the 2nd.

Reason for Jones over Chapman. One I like the Nose Tackles in next year's draft alot. There is a few of them that would be perfect for us. Second I think Chapman is very similar to Powe.

I think, without the injury this year, Chapman would be the top NT in the draft.

Not only is he a good fit, he has actually played the position for four years.

If we're getting a ILB and a Center with the 1st and 3rd round picks i'd much rather trade those 2 picks to move ahead of Miami and get Tannehill. Plus I don't think we're drafting a center the Chiefs drafted Hudson in the 2nd round believing he could be a very good center. Reason he played at guard last year is because Lilja was injured and they didn't want to ruin Wiegmanns starting game streak.

I just don't see this at all. Powe gets upfield and has good movement side to side, but needs to work on anchoring the line, whereas Chapman, imo, will have no problem anchoring the LOS, and should collapse the pocket, but might not get upfield himself like Powe can.

Ooo, I like this too... I like Jenkins, but the only reason I see him going before McNutt is b/c of his speed, not b/c he's a better receiver. In fact, McNutt brings a lot more to the table as far as receiver is concerned. Speed aside.

I agree with most of this. Harrison Smith has great discipline, he's a sure tackler and brings a good bit of size to the table. I haven't seen enough of him in coverage, especially deep and man to man to really like that part of his game.

In the highlight video, it seems most of the interceptions came to him b/c of his discipline and being in the right place at the right time for high, low or errant throws.

Also, the BIGGEST problem I have with this, is that we do not NEED a safety this early. Guys want to act as though Kendrick Lewis is still just a 5th round scrub. In fact, he has shown that he is more than up for the challenge. I think he's played very well his first two seasons. It didn't look pretty the first few games this last season, but I'm sure his role and responsibility as well as comfort level changed quite a bit when Berry went down.
