2012 Kansas City Royals Repository Thread

2012 Slogan: Our Time

A better, more accurate 2012 Slogan: It is Finally Next Year
(from Great Expectations)

An alternative slogan if you don't like that one: Someone has to win this crappy division
(from alnorth)

With the beginning of a new year, it is time for the 2012 version of the Royals Repository Thread. We've got Hosmer, we've got a 2011-dominating Gordon, we've got Moose, we've got hopefully a killer bullpen, we've got a stereotypical slow slugging DH, we've got easily one of the best defensive shortstops in the AL, we've got a promising catcher in Salvador Perez. Hell, we've got offense and promising prospects galore.

We do not have starting pitching.

Oh yeah, we've also got this:

Get ready for, (as of January 2012 anyway), one of the most confusing puzzles of a baseball season in recent Royals history. Will they suck? Maybe, I don't know. Will we be given a year of 0.500 baseball? Possibly, I don't know. Will they win the division and go to the playoffs for the first time in 27 years? For the first time in a long time, it could happen, I don't know. 92 losses, 92 wins, or anything in between would not surprise a lot of us.

Everything goes here except Gameday threads and really big news. If a giant story breaks, the Royals achieve some awesome milestone, or we sign/lose a highly significant player/coach/mascot/whatever, then it might also deserve its own thread. This being Chiefs Planet, please do not clutter the board with new threads about trivial Royals news or you will only annoy those who come here for just Chiefs football. If you aren't sure and its not a Gameday thread, it goes here.

What sort of stuff often goes here? SPchief explained it well, so I'll just copy that:

Quote:
If you locate something of interest.. ANYTHING.. deals on apparel, best ways in/out of the stadium, giveaways, great stories from this season or from seasons gone by, rumors, trades, anything.... feel free to post it here.

Yep.

And if they hadn't shit down their legs last month, they'd be contending for the division.

I wrote about this on my blog, basically said I envied the Dodgers the guts to make a big move.

The Royals have the prospects to reshape their starting pitching. They just need the balls to go for it.

None of this will occur. You know this, I know this, every Royals fan knows this.

The Royals aren’t in to win shit. The only time they are nice to the fans is when they want more money to fill Glass’ already stuffed pockets. It’s the sports-world version of an abusive relationship.

Do they?

You can make an easy case for $30 million in acquisitions in the offseason (and still stay under the DM-identified floor).

You can make an easy case for $40-50 milllion in comparison to other markets of similar size as KC.

Will they?

I won't hold my breath. I hope they still acquire at least one guy from outside the organization, as was discussed at the All-Star break. But I wouldn't be surprised at all if they resign Guthrie and sit on him as the "legitimate starter acquired."

That's the stupid thing. I estimate it would still be profitable with an $80 million payroll. David Glass just needs to take the next step to make the team a winner and buy a couple top-tier pitchers. Next year's 25-man roster:

Butler 8,500
Frenchy 6,750
Gordon 9,000
Chen 4,500
Escobar 3,000
Arguelles 1,380
Perez 1,000
Guthrie FA
Soria 750 (Option Buyout)
Hoch Arb 3
Paulino Arb 3
Pena Arb 3
Getz Arb 2
Wood Arb 1
Bourgeois Arb 1
Everyone else - ~500M

Total Obligations = ~34 mil
Plus a few players under arbitration?
This year alone the Royals spent 64MM on payroll and were profitable. No reason we can't jack it up with the 15MM/year increased ESPN revenue in 2014. Plus increased revenue from when this team is a contender? It would be ridiculous if the Royals don't make a splash.

Has anyone every paid attention to the Royals when they are doing semi-good? The stadium gets packed fast. Imagine if we fielded a legit contender? Glass would make a shitload of a money but he is too dumb or unwilling to see that.

If this team was in contention for a serious run at the AS break the attendance would be awesome.

Think he would rather take a sure $20-$30 mil as opposed to taking a bigger risk on more with the increased chance it may not happen. I know there are minor league payrolls and what not to deal with but I mean the dude makes more money than the payroll of the ML team in revenue sharing alone. That's before one single ticket, hot dog, cotton candy, etc. is sold.

Salvador Perez has a .815 OPS in 185 PAs. The last four 22-year-old catchers to post an .800+ OPS with at least 200 PAs: Brian McCann, Ivan Rodriguez, Ted Simmons and Johnny Bench.

I wouldn't say Butler is one of our worst players. Not by a long shot. I could think of several ahead of him.
