The History of the Chiefs Offensive Line since Will Shields

O-Line: John Alt, Dave Szott, Tim Grunhard, Will Shields, Ricky Siglar. Shields is drafted in the 3rd round of the NFL draft out of Nebraska. This line very much remains intact until 1997, when both starting tackles are replaced by LT Jeff Criswell from NY Jets and RT Glenn Parker from Buffalo. During this time, the Chiefs draft T Trezelle Jenkins (1st, '95), C Ben Lynch (7th, '96), & C Jeff Smith (7th, '96). Jenkins is a bust, Lynch becomes a reserve for other teams, & Smith, mainly a reserve, starts for Jacksonville in '00 & '01.

O-Line: Jeff Criswell, Dave Szott, Tim Grunhard, Will Shields, Glenn Parker. The Chiefs draft T Nathan Parks (7th, '97), & T Victor Riley (1st, '98 ). Parks barely plays, but Riley becomes the starting Right Tackle, moving Glenn Parker to replace an injured Dave Szott at Left Guard. The Chiefs draft T John Tait (1st, '99). Dave Szott returns moving Glenn Parker to Left Tackle to replce Jeff Criswell. The Chiefs end the '99 season with an O-Line of Glenn Parker, Dave Szott, Tim Grunhard, Will Shields, Victor Riley.

LT Glenn Parker leaves for NY Giants, the Chiefs draft T Darnell Alford (6th, '00). Alford barely plays. LG Dave Szott ends up playing just one game in what becomes his final season as a Chief. The Chiefs O-Line for the '00 season becomes John Tait, Jeff Blackshear, Tim Grunhard, Will Shields, Victor Riley.. The Chiefs draft T Alex Sulfsted (6th, '01). Sulfsted barely plays, catching on as a reserve for Washington in '02.

O-Line: John Tait, Brian Waters, Casey Wiegmann, Will Shields, Marcus Spears. This is the start of the Dick Vermeil era in Kansas City. Reserves Brian Waters & Marcus Spears become starters. Casey Wiegmann is brought in to replace Tim Grunhard.

O-Line: Willie Roaf, Brian Waters, Casey Wiegmann, Will Shields, John Tait. The Chiefs make a bold move to get LT Willie Roaf from New Orleans. This moves John Tait from Left Tackle to Right Tackle. This O-Line remains intact for two seasons while the Chiefs draft T Brett Williams (4th, '03) & G Jordan Black (5th, '03). Williams barely plays, while Black stays with the team as a reserve. RT John Tait would leave for Chicago in 2004 and be replaced by John Welbourn from Philadelphia. The Chiefs draft T Kevin Sampson (7th, '04) who would be a reserve for two seasons before being pressed into a starter's role.

O-Line: Jordan Black, Brian Waters, Casey Wiegmann, Will Shields, Kevin Sampson. This is the start of the Herm Edwards era in KC. Prior to the '06 season, the Chiefs draft T Will Svitek (6th, '05), T Jeremy Parquet (7th, '05) & G 'Tre Stallings (6th, '06) with a hint that Willie Roaf may soon be on the way out. Svitek hangs on as a reserve, Parquet barely plays, & the same for Stallings. LT Willie Roaf's retirement is a bit of surprise & RT John Welbourn would miss games for various reasons.

The Chiefs draft T Herb Taylor (6th, '07) who is a reserve pressed into starter's duty in '08. The O-Line is now Damion McIntosh, Brian Waters, Casey Wiegmann, John Welbourn, Chris Terry. Jordan Black has been replaced by Left Tackle Damion McIntosh from Miami. John Welbourn has moved to Right Guard to replaced the retired Will Shields, & Chris Terry, a reserve who played in Seattle two years prior, gets the start at Right Tackle. This, along with many reserves shuffled in & out, is the O-Line that Kansas City asked it's starting Quarterback to play behind last season.

The Chiefs draft G Brenden Albert (1st, '08 ) & T Barry Richardson (6th, '08 ). Albert is asked to help immediately at Left Tackle, while Richardson was active for the game against Carolina this season. The O-Line is: Brendan Albert, Brian Waters, Rudy Niswanger, Adrian Jones, Damion McIntosh. C Rudy Niswanger has been a reserve since 2006. RG Adrian Jones was claimed off waivers from NY Jets this off-season. Damion McIntosh makes the move from Left Tackle to Right Tackle.
