Movies

Yeah, so I saw a lot of movies this weekend.

Elizabeth: The Golden Age - Mediocre, at best. Slow and dragged on. Shorten it to 2 hours and it's golden. It's not, so it fails.

Michael Clayton - Amazing. Everything about it is awesome. However, it's VERY complex and mind bending. You have to think, so be prepared. I still feel like I'm missing key details of exactly what happened. Gotta see it again.

Across the Universe - Perfect is one word that comes to mind. It just works. And, contrary to many people I bet, the movie is best viewed sober. Trust me.

Weird, because we usually agree. Of course, it's the second quirky comedy we've disagreed on as of late. The other being, of course, Burn After Reading, which was terrible.
Burn After Reading is one of my favorite Coen Bros. movies... I thought that one was great. The problem it had was being the first movie they did after No Country for Old Men, and I think it was horribly marketed.

I was expecting Men Who Stare at Goats to be kinda quirky - it looked that way in the previews, and I'd been warned that it was off-beat, not a straight up comedy. I don't know if I need to own it, but I did enjoy the movie overall.

Weren't you the schmoe that berated me for putting Fargo at the top of their portfolio. I like BAR, a lot, but it's a estimable step below Fargo, NCfOM, Miller's, Lebowski, and Raising Arizona at the least.

I went into Goats thinking it'd be quirky, yes, but the trailer billed it as a laugh machine. If you watch the trailer, it has almost every laugh in the damn movie.

I didn't berate you for liking it, IIRC. I just disagreed with you on that notion. If that makes me a schmoe, then I guess I'm the schmoe.

I actually did think BAR was better than Fargo, but not better than any of the other four you mentioned. On short notice, I'd probably put it below Blood Simple, NCfOM, and Miller's, and about even with Lebowski and Raising Arizona, then Fargo.

I'd put BAR better than (in no particular order) Ladykillers, Intolerable Cruelty, O Brother, Man Who Wasn't There, Hudsucker and Barton Fink.

Bottom line on the Coens: They are just outstanding. Aside from IC and Ladykillers, there's not a single movie in their filmography that I'd not consider above average to excellent. Even Fargo.

But that's me. I'm sure you have your own opinions. So now you can be a schmoe.

I'm surprised you haven't figured out not to trust the marketing machine.

Maybe the difference between our viewing experiences was I'd been warned it wasn't a laugh riot, so I wasn't expecting that.

I do need to learn it.

Plenty of awesome trailers turned bad movies.

X3
I Am Legend
9

Just off the top of my head.

X3 and 9 sucked.

I just watched I am Legend a couple months ago and was fairly entertained. I'm sure it helped that I went into it expecting Battlefield Earth 2 on a quality level. I went in expecting a complete pile of shit, but was pleasantly surprised.

Lowered expectations can easily mean the difference between hating a movie and being entertained.

Plus, I got it on a free coupon to Redbox, so I didn't even have to pay the $1 rental.

Yeah, I'd watch it for $1 or free.

My problem was I read the book. And if they had actually shot the ending the book had, it would have easily been one of my favorite movies. But they blew it so bad that it's forever atrocious.

Yes. I was frankly amazed by how much I liked it. I thought about halfway through I could spot a cheesy twist ending coming a mile away and that was not the case. Wonderful movie.

If any movie was to win Best Picture this year (weakest year in a long while, I think), it was Up in the Air. Hurt Locker was a close second, but I knew it'd win anyway.

I enjoyed the Men Who Stare At Goats, but it paled by comparison to Up in the Air. I shouldn't have watched them back-to-back. And I must say that I really don't like Ewan McGregor very much.

I've certainly had my fill of Clooney for one evening, though.
