***OFFICIAL*** 2013 STL Cardinals Thread

From Bernie's column:

People have asked me why we’re not more emotional,” Matheny said in his office after Sunday’s game. “They say that we look subdued, always intense. That our actions are methodical, robotic at times. That’s what got us here. This isn’t the time to change it.”

It’s hard to argue with the manager’s assessment. The Cardinals finished with 97 victories, most by a Cards team since 2005, and tied with Boston for No. 1 in the majors this year.

Their 54-27 showing at Busch Stadium matches the 1985 team for the best single-season home winning percentage (.667) by the Cardinals since 1944.

A postseason theme has emerged, and it echoes the mantra that surfaced before the start of 2013: remember the fall of 2012. Remember falling to San Francisco in the NLCS.

The Cardinals’ veterans still haven’t forgotten. They still aren’t over it. It’s why Matheny resists GM John Mozeliak’s urgings to smile and put on a happier face.

Here's the most impressive aspect of the Cardinals' division championship: they prevailed over two other outstanding teams, Pittsburgh and Cincinnati.

The 97-win Cardinals were better this year (regular season) than they were in 2011, when they won 90 games, and 2012, when they won 88.
Here are a few numbers that help put the Cardinals' Central title and No. 1 NL seed in perspective:

* Since MLB switched to a three-division format in each league in 1994, this was only the sixth time that a division had three 90-plus win teams. St. Louis won 97, Pittsburgh 94, and Cincinnati 90.
* Since the format change, this was only the second time that an NL division had three 90-win teams. In 2002 the NL West had Arizona (98 wins), San Francisco (95) and Los Angeles (92).
* The 2013 Cardinals faced more esteemed and difficult competition at the top of the division than any of the division-winning teams managed by Tony La Russa.

The Pirates were hardly pushovers; the Cardinals had to work like mad and kick in with a strong finish to put the division away, and didn't clinch until Game No. 160.

The Cardinals went 9-10 against Pittsburgh this season and were 11-8 vs. Cincinnati.

The Cardinals won only three of 10 games at PNC Park in Pittsburgh and split the 10 games at Cincinnati. The Cardinals were 6-3 against both teams at Busch Stadium.

The Cardinals (1st), Pirates (3rd) and Reds (5th) ranked among the top five in wins in the NL. The three teams were among the top 11 in wins in MLB. All three teams finished in the top five in the majors for best overall ERA, and each were in the top five MLB for best starting-pitching ERA.

The original purpose to this piece was to point out that the Cardinals managed to finish with the league's best record while competing in a division that had three 90-win teams for only the second time in the last 19 years of National League baseball.

The Cardinals really earned this.
Thanks for reading ...
— Bernie

Well, I think Motte is having an MRI on his elbow today, hopefully he'll be back & Boggs back to middle relief.

Unfortunatley, this doesn't work if you've sat in the rain all day at Wrigley and then the one who sucks the penis comes in and promptly gives the game away in the 9th inning.

Boggs has blown 9 out of 13 save opportunities. Motte blew opening day a few years back and lost the job. Hope they are consistent.

This isn't rocket science. No matter how much "stuff" you got in your pitching bag of tricks, closing the 9th is a lot about whats between the ears. And Boggs just doesn't have the mental capacity or tenacity to handle closing.

Folks - who else is there? You want to give Joe "Grip it and rip it" Kelly the gig? Rosenthal's done absolutely nothing to earn it; he's hanging every breaker he throws and his fastball has shown less movement on it this year than last. Yesterday he couldn't find the plate with a flashlight and a map.

Mujica is the only other real alternative and I just don't love the idea of a guy that relies on movement, location and defense to generate outs. There's just too much Franklin in the boy for me to be excited about him taking the 9th.

Boggs probably is the best option we have with Motte down. Maybe Rosenthal can force the issue, but to this point he certainly hasn't. Maybe by 2014 Cleto will have forced himself into the conversation, but his command isn't where it needs to be to this point.

Matheny's left in a tough spot here; his closer went down late in the spring and his backup options are spinning their wheels.

Oh, and please stop using that BS blown save stat for a guy that was a setup man. Blown saves aren't really save opportunities when it's the setup guy getting them, that's mostly a blown hold. If you're going to start calling every blown hold a blown save (as the statistic does), then you might as well start calling every hold a save while you're at it. It's a silly mis-use of a straightforward stat. He blew 3 'saves' last year by giving up a single run in the 7th once and the 8th twice. Those aren't blown saves, they're blown holds. In 2011 he blew 4 saves, 2 in the 6th, 1 in the 7th and one single save blown in the 9th.

He's blown seven 'saves' in the last 2 years and only 1 of them was a true save situation. So you can either count those first 6 as blown saves and include every single hold he's secured, or count only the single truly blown save that he's had over the last 2 years.

Rosenthal should be given the oppertunity. He HAS shown the potential. We need him to step up, lets see if spending the winter with Carp set him up for success

Its a valid measurement to judge a potential closer. Just what would you use to evaluate a closer? There is no closer evaluation template to be applied to every potential closer.

No it isn't, not if you don't use it correctly.

He has literally zero chance to earn a save there so how the hell do you hold a blown hold against him? Especially if you don't give him credit for the holds he did secure?

Boggs hadn't blown a single save since May of 2011 - he just hadn't. I don't care if he incurred a BS, he was not in line for a save in any of those situations. And if you're going to start dinging him for blown saves when he blows a hold, you have to give him credit for being 3rd in major league baseball last year when he held 34.

So at that point, his success rate was 34 of 37; I'd say that's pretty damn outstanding.

This is nothing more than people wanting to install Rosenthal into the 9th without him having to earn it so they're mis-using the hell out of a stat to try to make their point. You say we need him to step up? What do you think we've asked him to do twice in the last 4 days? And both times he spit the bit in the 8th with a 1 run lead. Sounds like a ticket to a promotion to the 9th to me.

Oh, and if that's how you want to use the statistic, Trevor Rosenthal has blown every save opportunity he's ever had and is presently leading the league in blown saves.

Yeah, real good use of the statistic there, champ. You're seeing what you want to see and nothing else. Rosenthal's command is shot, his heat is straight, his breaking ball just flat sucks right now and he's blown the 2 high leverage situations he's been given this year. But yeah, lets ignore all that and manipulate the save stat in favor of just handing the kid the 9th.

Well ****. Motte hasn't been cleared to throw, surgery if insufficient improvement by May 1.

Might as well schedule it now; that elbow isn't going to heal itself if it hasn't by now.

With that, yeah - go ahead and put Rosenthal in. He's going to have some serious bumps and bruises along the way, but it's now time to find a long-term option and not a 1 month stop-gap solution. If we do anything in October, it won't be with Mitchell Boggs closing games.

I'd rather see Mujica be the short term closer than Rosenthal. Mujica has been the Cardinals most reliable reliever behind Motte since being acquired.
