Chiefs coach Todd Haley was on Sirius NFL Radio last week going through all the Chiefs picks. I noticed he seemed to gush a little extra about second round pick Javier Arenas.
Haley says "there was no one more excited than I was" when the Chiefs were able to select him.
"When you start this process months ago, and going through the scouts reports, I don't know that you can read a better football character side of a report. And this guy has football character. When scouts say he treats everyday and every practice like the Super Bowl, you take notice. Again, you put on the tape and he backs it up. this kid's a player. He's got a chip on his shoulder. He's another guy that's probably been told all along he's too small.
"He found a way to get into a pretty good program there and play pretty good defense and win a national championship. He's a pretty good returner. I think he's the kind of guy you want on your team.
"When his name came off the board, there was no one more excited than I was. He's a defensive version of Dexter McCluster."
High praise from a team that places an extra emphasis on character.

It's just that when you have two versions of the same player, it requires two versions of the same post.

I don't understand Haley's comment. I think McCluster has the potential to be a dynamic playmaker and to be a matchup nightmare. I think Arenas is going to be a solid returner and a better version of Benny Sapp at nickel.

One's a playmaker, the other is just a solid guy to fill in a few gaps. These two guys have similar character, but that's where the distinction ends.

I wonder who out there is the defensive version of Bowe or Albert. I don't really understand the parallel between a slot wr/scat back and any defensive player

I dont think its about height. I think its about both guys not being 40 speed fast but both having tremendous agility, maybe the best 2 in the entire draft class(throw spiller in that mix)

Also if we were playing Mccluster Arenas would be the guy to cover him, they should have a lot of battles in practice

Agility was our biggest weakness, in my opinion, last year. Charles is blazing fast(probably the fastest in the NFL besides Holliday) but his agility isn't the best. Flowers was our most agile player, no question but now he is not. Carr lacks it, our linebackers lack it big time, even DJ who has great forward speed doesn't show great agility. And our safeties lack it(obviously).

I think all season we were scrambling for an agility slot WR, with Long and Wade, and Bowe has to work on it. If anyone saw Haley trying to teach Bowe to get deeper/lower at the hips in his breaks, thats for agility.

I guess you don't consider Chris Johnson to be that fast.

No because Mcfadden ran right after him on the same track and posted a crazy number also, a number much faster than Charles.

Jacoby Ford is faster than Chris Johnson.

Oh, and BTW CJ ran that time at the combine, a notoriously Slow track.
Talking about the NFLs fastest and not involving CJ hurts your credibility pretty badly.

mcfadden was 4.27 Johnson was 4.24 and Ford was 4.28 i think. Charles was 4.3 something

CJs speed has translated to the field.
Not saying the other guys haven't or won't, just that there is a reason CJ has had so much success thus far, and that reason is SPEED.

eh we're getting off topic here. But putting up huge numbers for a crappy team with no passing game is not that big of a deal. he did have a good average, which was nice. Charles had a better average, but yet again... crappy team.

Johnson is also a good running back, speed aside. And has better agility than Charles.


At the beginning of the season when LJ was running the ball, Bowe was catching, our safeties average age was 49 and Leggett was our Nickle, we were easily the team with the worst agility in the NFL. And when i say agility im talking about quickness, and turning, not speed, every NFL team has speed.

If anyone remembers when Asante Samuel came out, he was seen as too small to play starting corner, but was an agility monster... Quickness and turning...
