20 BIGGEST BOX OFFICE FLOPS OF 2016

BY BLAIR MARNELL AND IGN FILM TEAM With just a few weeks left this year, there’s still a chance that the 2016 box office could come out ahead of 2015’s record totals. But that’s not the complete picture of this year’s cinematic landscape. There was a lot of carnage along the way, as previously safe sequels and franchises were soundly rejected by audiences or met with indifference.

Even a few quality films fell victim to some of 2016’s strange box office fluctuations, which may only encourage Hollywood to take fewer and fewer risks going forward. We can’t say what the future holds for the movie industry, but we can look back at some of the biggest flops of the year. Note that our box office data is current as of December 21, 2016.

13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers of Benghazi
Production Budget: $50 million

Box Office: $52.8 million (domestic); $69.4 million (worldwide total)

Alice Through The Looking Glass
Production Budget: $170 million

Box Office: $77 million (domestic); $299.5 million (worldwide total)

Allegiant
Production Budget: $110 million

Box Office: $66 million (domestic); $179.2 million (worldwide total)

Bad Santa 2
Production Budget: $26 million

Ben-Hur
Production Budget: $100 million

Deepwater Horizon
Production Budget: $122 million

Box Office: $61.4 million (domestic); $118.6 million (worldwide total)

Deepwater Horizon was loosely based on the infamous BP oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico back in 2011. And while there is a compelling story to be told about the men who attempted to prevent an ecological disaster, the producers of this film played down the controversy and turned Mark Wahlberg’s Mike Williams into a more traditional Hollywood hero. Except Hollywood wasn’t buying it, and neither were moviegoers. Instead, Deepwater Horizon was met by protests and anger, especially in Louisiana.

Our review said that Deepwater Horizon was “a movie that flinches from explanation, but not from brutality. Beyond the visuals, the charisma of the cast also does a whole lot to overcome this shortfall and once the well goes downhill, the movie turns into an epic thrill ride. Even so, the lack of a more thoughtful examination of the characters, the causes of the problem with the well, and the aftermath is distressing.” It also noted that the lone female character on the rig, Gina Rodriguez’s Andrea Fleytas was basically reduced to “screaming” instead of showing any signs of heroism.

Free State of Jones
Production Budget: $49 million

Box Office: $20.8 million (domestic); $25 million (worldwide total)

Ghostbusters
Production Budget: $144 million

Box Office: $128.3 million (domestic); $229 million (worldwide total)

Has there ever been a movie more hated than the new Ghostbusters before a single frame was shot? The news that director Paul Feig was doing an all-female Ghostbusters remake did not sit well with some fans, who decided to continuously trash the film all the way through production and into release. But despite what the haters would have us believe, $128.3 million was actually a pretty decent box office return. The problem is that it didn’t recoup the budget and Sony paid a lot more than that to promote the new Ghostbusters. Because of that, this movie ended up in the red. Whether the announced sequel will actually happen remains to be seen.

“Ghostbusters can't decide whether it wants to be a completely new take on the property or a loving homage to the original, and because of that it's trapped between the two,” said our reviewer, before adding that “it's frankly disappointing that the new Ghostbusters movie doesn't work as well as it had the potential to...I wanted this to be a movie as worthy as a cult following as the film on which it's based, but for all that does work about Ghostbusters -- and, again, it's the leads that carry it as much as they can -- there's plenty that holds it back from being great.” It might be a while before someone tries to make another Ghostbusters, but it will happen eventually.

Gods of Egypt
Production Budget: $140 million

Box Office: $31.1 million (domestic); $150.7 million (worldwide total)

Jane Got a Gun
Production Budget: $25 million

Box Office: $1.5 million (domestic); $3 million (worldwide total)

There is actually a really interesting story behind Jane Got a Gun...but it’s about all of the drama behind-the-scenes, including financing problems, production delays, stars dropping out of the film, and even a director who walked out on the first day of shooting! None of that made for a smooth movie making experience, and the resulting movie probably suffered for it.

Keeping Up With The Joneses
Production Budget: $25 million

Box Office: $14.9 million (domestic); $28.8 million (worldwide total)

The glory days of Zach Galifianakis as a box office draw appear to be over, but he’s far from the only one responsible for Keeping Up With The Joneses. The film was pushed back for reshoots, and it bombed on its opening weekend by coming in seventh place...which just happened to be a few weeks after Galifianakis’ Masterminds also received a disappointing reception.

Our review noted that “Keeping Up with the Joneses does get funnier the further into the run time it gets, but that doesn’t ever stop it from feeling more than just another safe, studio comedy.” The review also praised the performances of Jon Hamm and Gal Gadot, while suggesting that the film may have been better served if Galifianakis’ character had been played by another actor.

Kubo and the Two Strings
Production Budget: $57.8 million

Box Office: $48 million (domestic); $69.9 million (worldwide total)

Now, this one’s a heartbreaker. Laika has put out some really great animated films, and Kubo and the Two Strings lived up to the studio’s reputation. But it just couldn’t draw in moviegoers even with a surprisingly aggressive ad campaign that reportedly cost close to $40 million. That means this movie lost a lot of money.

While our reviewer noted some holes in the film, they added that Kubo was a particularly strong movie. “From composer Dario Marianelli, to first time director, president and CEO of Laika Travis Knight, to the voices of Academy Award-winning and nominated actors like Charlize Theron, Matthew McConaughey, Rooney Mara, and Ralph Fiennes, Kubo and the Two Strings goes above and beyond both on and off screen.” That’s why it’s unfortunate that not all flops are bad movies. Kubo deserves to be discovered by a new audience, and maybe it will be, in the future.

Max Steel
Production Budget: $20 million

Box Office: $3.8 million (domestic); $6.3 million (worldwide total)

Morgan
Production Budget: $8 million

Box Office: $4 million (domestic); $8.8 million (worldwide total)

As flops go, Morgan didn’t lose that much money, thanks to its low budget. But Fox spent $20 million trying to promote it, and it’s never going to see any of that money come back. Morgan also had the unfortunate distinction of opening at 18th place at the box office, and it didn’t last long after that.

“It's frustrating that Morgan -- like its title character -- had the DNA to be great, yet falls short of its potential,” said our reviewer. “There's good in the movie, but ultimately it never ends up being as compelling as it reaches to be.”

Pride and Prejudice and Zombies
Production Budget: $28 million

Box Office: $10.9 million (domestic); $16.4 million (worldwide total)

Snowden
Production Budget: $39 million

Box Office: $21.6 million (domestic); $31.3 million (worldwide total)

On paper, Snowden looked like it had everything a film could possibly need. There was a compelling story based upon real events surrounding Edward Snowden and his infamous leaks, along with a very talented cast including Joseph Gordon-Levitt as the title character. Oliver Stone was the director, and it seemed like the election season was the perfect time to release this movie. It wasn’t.

Unsurprisingly, IGN gave Snowden a stellar review. “You need to see Snowden. It’s a powerful, surprisingly personal film driven by an extraordinary performance by the lead actor and captured with remarkable discipline by a skilled director.” Even after its box office performance, we still believe in this film. It’s just gonna take some time to catch on.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows
Production Budget: $135 million

Box Office: $82 million (domestic); $245.6 million (worldwide total)

The BFG
Production Budget: $140 million

Box Office: $55.5 million (domestic); $178.4 million (worldwide total)

What does it mean when a Disney movie directed by Steven Spielberg and based upon a Roald Dahl classic can’t catch on at the box office? For starters, it’s yet another indication that all bets are off when it comes to movies. The BFG isn’t even a bad film, but it wasn’t quite as magical as some of Spielberg’s earlier films. Still, we expected it to do a lot better than it actually did.

We have to agree with our reviewer that “if The BFG occasionally whizzes, it never pops off the screen like the very best Spielberg fantasies do, despite the best efforts of Mark Rylance’s genial giant.” If nothing else, at least The BFG felt like a worthy adaptation of Dahl’s book.

The Huntsman: Winter's War

Yeah, that's probably just me being a fan of Will Smiff.

Deathstroke is boring as shit in the comics anyway. He's cold, cool and calculating but not nearly as cool as Batman. I have to wonder how much of it was the writers because I've never seen the daughter angle for Deathstroke and that seemed to be a main plot line for him in Suicide Squad.

2 different characters

Deadshot is Floyd Lawton, who made his first appearance in 1950 as a Batman villain. Deathstroke is Slade Wilson, who started off in 1980 as a Teen Titans supporting character.

And yes Deathstroke is boring as shit.
