Malaysia Airlines loses contact with plane carrying 239 people

Malaysia Airlines says it has lost contact with a plane with 239 aboard enroute from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing.

The airline said in a statement early Saturday it was attempting to locate the Boeing 777 after it lost contact with Subang Air Traffic Control at 2:40 a.m. It was scheduled to land in Beijing at 6:30 a.m.

China's state-run news agency Xinhua reported the plane was lost in airspace controlled by Vietnam, and did not make contact with Chinese air traffic controllers.

The plane is carrying 227 passengers, including two infants, and 12 crew members. The airline said it is working with authorities to locate the plane.

Boeing said on its Twitter account it is monitoring the situation, and "our thoughts are with everyone on board."

Whose knows - Since early 2000, China has been fighting with the East Turkestan Islamic Movement - a Muslim separatist group founded by militant Uighurs (sometimes spelled Uyghurs).

China blamed Uighur "terrorists" for carrying out suicide attacks in Beijing and recently in Kunming for the train attack that killed 27 and injured more than 140 others.

For there to be no mayday a few things would have to happen like radio went out (along with the ability to fly the plane), pilot put it into a nosedive (like that Egyptian Air pilot), complete electrical system malfunction, a bomb or other event that caused an immediate and catastrophic failure, a rapid decompression that knocked everyone out.

There are lots of reasons this could have happened and a few don't involve paranoid Chinese or terrorists.

Apparently there are reports that there were lost/stolen passports used on this plane. Not a good sign.

For instance, after the airline released a manifest, Austria denied that one of its citizens was onboard the flight as the list stated. The Austrian citizen was safe and sound, and his passport had been stolen two years ago, Austrian Foreign Ministry spokesman Martin Weiss told CNN.

Similarly, Italy's foreign ministry confirmed that no Italians were onboard MH370, even though an Italian was listed on the manifest. Malaysian officials said they were aware of reports that the Italian's passport was also stolen, but had not confirmed it.

In a weird way you almost hope this can be explained by an act of ill will.

To think that the safest type of airplane in the world, flown by an airline with a very safe flying record, flown by a captain with 3+ decades of experience and assisted by a co-pilot who was just profiled on a CNN International inside the cockpit series THREE DAYS ago can simply drop out of the sky during the safest part of the flight (cruising altitude) in perfect weather conditions is somewhat unnerving.

Rolls-Royce has developed a modification to prevent the problem recurring

I'd easily bet it's the same problem that's been popping up in those engines in recent years(the engines have had a number of similar incidents where the fuel flow got blocked) and they never got around to fixing it.
